There are pots that come along that have an inherent wobble in them. Of course, it’s *helpful* to be able to make pots that aren’t swaying around as they spin, but inevitably it happens and thus, being able to trim pots that are undulating is rather helpful.
At the end of the day, you’ll only ever see these subtle movements when the vessel is spinning around rapidly like this, so if it’s only a tiny waver, then I tend to just live with them. It’s not like you’ll be placing all the pots you have at home on a turntable to see how level they are, and if you are doing that, then well, what on earth is wrong with you.
Oh! And thank you @richardcarter6952 for the absurdly long spinner seen at the start. This was a very kind gift he made and gave to me without my request, I’d envisioned such a tool and had thought about getting in touch with him to commission one. We then met at a book talk and low and behold, this is what he pulled out of his pocket. I use it to pin the pot down in place after it’s been trimmed just to burnish the rim, (although it has many other uses).

I love your videos! Thank you for your help. I watch your pulling videos over and over I'm slowly getting better
Great video! I remember being far too obsessed with getting perfectly on center pots until I realized it doesn't matter as long as I can trim it!
Glad you mentioned the most important thing: What to do if you see a little wobble when it's spinning ? Stop the wheel, and they disappear !
the shapes you make are mesmerizing ❤
You are a master and thank you for sharing that with me. I hate the wobbles but now I feel like I can deal with them a little bit better.🎉
*vice versa. Not visa versa.
I mean, you’re not doing mass factory production for a reason 😉
Maybe people like a little wobble and don’t even know it. Shows that someone put effort into it.
As talented as you are, you aren’t a machine. This is what gives your work life, imo anyway. 💜
you sound like the guy making jean glasses (jasses) /p
Took a pottery class in college and wasn’t strong enough to get the bat to stay down so my plate came out lopsided as it kept sliding on the wheel. Put a couple off-center intersecting lines on it to trick the eye into thinking it was round. Professor was happy enough with it on grading day and almost gave me a good grade without ever picking it up. Couldn’t live with myself so I flipped it over for him and admitted I wasn’t strong enough to do it right.
He was sooo impressed by the optical illusion! …but he still reduced my grade on that piece. Jerk.
Amazing how much lopsided-ness you can ignore on a pottery piece if you handle it right!
I trim all my pots like this ….
