In this episode we read from “The Quaker Invasion of Massachusetts,” by Richard P. Hallowell. This book was published in 1883. This episode tells of the persecution of Ann Austin and Mary Fisher, who landed in Boston in 1656, and were immediately improsoned for their Quaker beliefs. It also tells of the persection, torture, imprisonment, and even hanging of other Quakers, and of the legal codes enacted by the Puritan leaders to persecute them.

'Puritianism' is a social disease that flows and ebbs with time. It crests every 3rd generation (ca 75 years) without fail. Henry Lewis Mencken (1880-1953) defined 'Puritianism' as the great fear that someone, somewhere, was enjoying life.

'Thee' was once a 'familiar' and 'You' was once a formal address.
No wonder that 'loose' woman was punished for being so 'intimate' with her 'Social Superiour' !
I don't think they even sincerely thought those were witches they were flogging. If they did, they wouldn't have dared to do this for fear of the consequences to themselves, like egging and robbing the houses of mafia members. LOL – I'm a CanUk. 1st ancestor arrived in US in 1638 .2nd arrived in 1652 a Royalist pow sold as an indentured servant for 7 years by the Cromwell puritan crowd.
The latters sons did well in America but in 1775-1776 (after founding and developing Stillwater, NY, became political targets of thier former tenants, members of the local 'Committee of Correspondence', puritan members of the 'Orange Church' of Salem who had immigrated to 'Still Water' and treated well by militia Col Issac Mann (my direct relative and F&I wars vet with family losses). None of the committee had any reputation but that of low life petty criminals of low esteme as archive records show.
The Col and his 13 yr-old son spent 2 years on prison ships before release and escape to Canada. His other 3 sons were arrested & imprisoned before release and escape to Canada, where they joined Loyalists regiments (ignored by Yankee history myth) and had the revenge pleasure of participating in very successful southern raids (never mentioned in Yankee myth) driving revolting neighbours to beg Washington for help that never, ever arrived.
Born to the breed, they thrived in exile and their descendents went on to serve King & Country in WWI & WWII gallantly, still bleeding and dying loyally.

I had no idea. Pretty sure the quakers, or friends led the abolitionist movement to free slaves here. Usually they will volunteer to be medics in war. The puritans weren't very pure. Fairly evil.
The king should have protected them better.

I live in a town in Plymouth County. We still have the original Quaker meeting house that had been built in secret.
Plymouth colony did not have the same religious views as the others.

This is a textbook example of Calvinism at work. John Calvin (real name Jean Cauvin) developed HIS religion in Geneva in the mid 1500s. The ultimate narcissist with an unbelievable constant state of rage, demanded the Geneva Council declare him to be The One & Only Voice of God on Earth AND that his writings/utterances be treated as Holy Writ the same as the Bible's authors. Unbelievable but the Geneva granted his demands making them law that no man was allowed to speak against him.
I'm still trying to find the passage where Jesus commands His followers to have their own personal torturer. Geneva was ruled by the whip, chopping block, hang rope, drowning pole for 22 years. I could go on for hours what an evil vile human Calvin was. Very sadly today Calvinism has some popularity with celebrity level leaders like John Piper, John MacArthur, Justin Peters who've fooled hundreds of thousands thru twisting the Bible while sounding very "biblical".
The dictator at Plymouth sounds exactly and behaved exactly as John Calvin. A nasty viscous mentality with the right to beat and abuse while claiming they're following the Sinai Covenant and Laws of Moses. John Calvin did not understand or refused to read Jesus declaring the old law was dead, and He was ushering in the New Covenant that He would write on people's hearts. The Moses/Sinai laws were never given to the non-Jews but for a power hungry despot enforcing the old covenant of the Jews meant he could inflict pain and death, while claiming he's doing God's Will.

Religion sucks!
A few years ago I worked with a woman who went to some fundamentalist church whose minister was telling his easily-led flock of people that they should be like the Puritans. I told her that the Puritans were an intolerant, nasty bunch who killed Quakers or anybody who stumbled into their colony. She got angry at me. I told her to check the history and asked her if she believed everything that her minister told her without looking into it. Sadly, real history is being ignored and made into some happy-clappy Hallmark movie.
People in the current year like to ignore the fact that witches are still executed by government orders. See Saudi Arabia for one example.
This level of religious hatred and insanity has been with us for many centuries, especially since the invention of monotheism (which almost REQUIRES it). You'd think that, by now, the world would have outgrown such things: grown up; but no, it's still with us, all over the world, although the extremism has (mostly) moved to other places in the "civilized" world. That, of course, does not apply to today's most-violent-and-hate-filled major religion, Islam, which is still exporting its fanaticism and hatred to other nations, in particular to the West.
It's good that "Unworthy History" helps expose these un-woke/un-PC reports. It helps free certain people from the shakles of fear, IMHO.
