When my mental health is bad I also only want to read non fiction. I just find the immersiveness of fiction really stressful at those times for some reason. But I've also realized that at those times I really need to read some fiction just to get out of my head, I just have a lot of resistance to it. Brains are weird.

I am also in a reading slump caused by…something? My workload at work, medication issues…something. I'm at burnout right now. I spoke with my employers and we came to an arrangement and hopefully that will work out. I'm still applying for different positions, though; in case they decide not to renew my contract.

Hey Jess, I'm probably the 200th person to say this to you but if your ovaries and uterus are killing you with cramps, did you check for Endometriosis?
(It's one of the hardest diagnostics to get since doctors are the worst with this, they don't take it seriously or even don't know about it)
totally agree with you that his dark materials is so good and i'm just like gimme more. oof with you on the cramps this week. i had a month where i didn't read anything and just watched 10 seasons of the walking dead bc i always fall back on zombie media when i'm going through it. i also started jade legacy and i was invested but then just took a break 200 pages in so want to see about finishing it soon. middle grade reads are what i started with to pull me back to reading so amari and hide and seeker were two books i'm glad i finally read. best of luck on what you are inspired to read!

if you're curious about the Romanovs and Nicholas II, the podcast "Behind the Bastards" has a four-part episode on him; the Robert Massie series is good, but it's profoundly sympathetic to Nicholas II, and really glosses over his faults.

I bought Quinta's memoir after she was on A Black Lady Sketch Show, but I haven't read it yet. But I fucking LOVE her. I am so so happy for her and I hope Abbott stays on for a loooooong long long time.
