Women harvesting rowan berries. Processing in a cider mill. Berries on a conveyor belt. Cleaning with water. Pressing the berries. Trays with berries on top of each other. Juice runs down the trays. Two handfuls of rowan berries lie on a table, which corresponds to seven lemons.
01:39-03:23 – Naval war, German Reich, 1944.
Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz visits a training facility for the small combat units of the Kriegsmarine.The lined-up sailors walk along the front accompanied by Admiral Hellmuth Heye. Dönitz speaks to the men. Training run of the explosive boats. Crews get ready to set sail. Dönitz and other officers inspect the exercise from the shore. 04:47-07:08 – Retreat, Geilenkirchen, German Reich, 1944.
German infantry with heavy weapons, including child soldiers. Battle for Geilenkirchen. Students from the non-commissioned officer school in Jülich defend Geilenkirchen. Instruction of the non-commissioned officer students. Soldiers take up their positions in the destroyed city. Soldiers with anti-tank grenades in their foxholes. Sherman tanks at a roadblock. Soldiers fire with Panzerschreck. Shot down Sherman tanks. US prisoners at Wallendorf, (Speaker:) “Liberators of Europe who are forever chewing gum”. Prisoners are interrogated by a captain.
07:09-09:13 – Retreat, Hungary, 1944.
(Speaker:) “Debrecen and Grosswardein area”. German troops on the march. Anti-tank gun PaK 43 and artillery fire. Assault guns and infantry in battle in fields. Grenadiers advance across cornfields under the protection of assault guns. Anti-aircraft, anti-tank, artillery and assault guns in action. Burning T-34 tank. A dead German soldier is recovered. Individual Soviet soldiers surrender. Faces of Soviet prisoners in a prisoner collection point. Shot-up T-34 tanks.
09:14-09:49 – Retreat, Waffen-SS, Romania, 1944.
German troops arrive in a recaptured village in Transylvania. SS soldiers are greeted by residents. SS grenadiers are provided with schnapps and food by villagers. Dirty faces of Waffen-SS soldiers.
09:50-10:28 – Naval war, East Prussia, 1944.
German Navy intervenes in the land battles from the sea. German warship. A naval unit shelling the Memel bridgehead (speaker). Naval artillery firing.
10:29-12:12 – Tank battle between Goldap and Gumbinnen, East Prussia, 1944
Panther tanks near Gumbinnen-Goldap. Infantrymen and tanks in combat. Town sign: “Nemmersdorf. Gumbinnen district. Gumbinnen district”. The recaptured town. Devastation and destruction in the town. Dead civilians lie on the street. Destroyed horse-drawn wagons from a refugee convoy from Gumbinnen district, including Girnen (sign on one wagon: “Oskar Kegenbein Girnen district Gumbinnen”). Mass graves of dead German civilians. German soldiers in foxholes. Airplanes in the sky. German attack aircraft (Stuka Ju 87) attacking positions. Low-flying aircraft. Column of smoke. German Panther tanks. Shot down Soviet tanks, IS-2, ISU-152, and mostly T-34s(76 and 85). Wreckage. Destroyed bridge with overturned T-34 tank.
