  1. 2:56 cannot remember whether it was Bob or Doug that when they landed in the sea mentioned they had sea sickness, this statement cheered me up as I get sea sickness and figured I could never be in space, of course they would have to let 50+ yr olds with no skills into space but it's not a definite no lol.

  3. Would a liquid to gas turbine run by solar power be more efficient & compact than a solar array.
    Also we need businesses that are willing to say two weeks whenever anyone from FAA needs anything. Like restaurants, office supplies, etc.

Boeing must be doing some crazy Voodoo "to turn (StarLiner) into an operational spacecraft by the end of the week" since "the thrusters that went wrong have all burned up in the atmosphere" (Said around 3min35sec mark) You'd think it might take a bit longer than that since the only reference they have has been.. you know, burned up in the atmosphere.. Either that or I'm misunderstanding something lol.

  6. The idea of solar power in orbit and microwave power downlink has come and gone many times in the past 4 decades.

    One of the persistent problems has to do with them microwave downlink. Amazingly enough that microwave downlink can be surprisingly efficient — approaching 70%. Efficiency is not the problem, however. The problemΒ has to do with RF noise pollution that the TX will generate. There are two sources of this:

    (1) spectral purity of the transmitter. The smallest possible transmitter is going to have to produce something like 10 GW of microwave power, something like 10 million microwave ovens worth of microwave power. Suppose that the the sidebands of the transmitter were suppressed by 70 dB (which is pretty good!). That means that there would still be 1 kW of out of band power blasting down out of the sky … in a frequency band that is good for spacecraft communication and for terrestrial wifi and cellphone traffic. Let's just say that 70 dB is really optimistic.

    (2) But it's even worse than that. Suppose that the transmitter was *perfect*, absolutely spectrally pure. Unfortunately all that microwave power has to pass through the ionosphere, and the ionosphere is not perfect at all. In fact, it's kind of dirty, from an RF point of view. Without going into detail, there are things such as ponderomotive forces, upper/lower hybrid waves, etc., that generate a lot of nonlinear effects that will ruin that pure spectrum from the transmitter.

    If you say, "well, 10 GW is a lot of power, maybe it would be worth it…" Unfortunately, no. The electric power consumption of the United States is about 10 TW, so you'd need 1000 of those satellite power stations just to supply the US.

    Also the whole solar space plant stuff seems pretty weird. I mean yes, to atmosphere and no night. But how many earth based plants and batteries could be built with the same money? Also transfering the energy using a beam seems hard. Well, I'm still happy analyzing even such projects get funded. Otherwise we might oversee something great.

  9. Many are concerned that microwaves from a space power system would fry people etc. on earth. Your concerns are based on the frequency used in a microwave oven. Such frequency will surely not be employed by space power satellites. If they did, I suspect that the beam would hardly pass through a cloud (of water droplets).

  10. Scott I recall reading that SpaceX has 3 Dragon capsules and does not have any plans to build any more. Do they use each capsule for both cargo and passengers? What is the life span of a Dragon capsule? If they build another Dragon capsule will it need to be separately certified by NASA?

    1. Today SpaceX achieved new milestone by landing two Starships on Mars in one Martian day.

    2. After 20 cargo flights to Mars with the reusable Starships, the first crewed landing happened. SpaceX robots clapped happily as the first four Martians stepped foot on the red dirt of Mars to inspect the new robotically built main building where they will be living.

    3. Today marked not only the five year anniversary of the SpaceX Martian colony, but the first time the base population is at 1000 Martians. Elon said it can officially be declared that mankind is now multiplanetary. Furthermore, the starbase is now 50 percent self sufficient thanks to hydroponic production, it's thermal nuclear plant and water recycling and production facility.

    4. Today the US sponsored initiative passed the UN security council vote declaring a new country of the SpaceX moonbase which also clears the way for the the newest human government experiment, a direct democracy for the Martians.
