In a frantic message to HQ, they laid out the chilling reality: anti-aircraft ammunition was down to a desperate 18 percent. One more ambush, and they’d be sitting ducks.
But before they could even catch their breath, orders came over the radio—HMS Greyhound had just gone under off the coast of Crete. Hundreds of sailors were floundering in the water, and Gloucester and her escorts were the only Allied ships within reach. There was no time to rearm. They’d have to risk it all, hoping the German bombers didn’t spot them.
Yet, as Gloucester tore through the Kythira Strait, the faint rumble of engines began to tremble through the ship, growing louder and thicker as if the air itself were charging with dread. Suddenly, the sky itself darkened, filled with shadows like a black swarm of locusts blotting out the sun.
And then came the sound—a maddening wail that ripped through the sailors, stunning them with raw terror. The ship’s guns sprang to life just as the gull-winged machines burst from the clouds, howling like banshees.
For Gloucester, her exhausted crew, and their nearly depleted guns, this was to be their last stand…

Poor judgement by HQ. I think the Royal Navy underestimated air power at the beginning of the war.
If the Royal Navy underestimated air power we in the USA did worse. After WWl Captain Billy Mitchell told the Navy that the next war would be in the air and ships would be sunk without challenges. The Navy OK'd a test but the rules were Mitchell had to bomb test ships at around 10,000 feet. Billy said they need to bomb at low level. Well the Navy rules were adhere to and nothing was hit. Billy was court marshaled if I remember correctly. However around December 8, 1941 Billy got a phone call from the Navy or what was left of it at Pearl Harbor. Next thing Billy designed the B-25 bomber named after him. The Mitchell. I wish I could understand human idiocy. General Milly just retired from the Pentagon and all he concerned himself with was LGBTQ SCREWED UP THE BUTT and white man rage and anger. Had no clue the military exists to kill our enemies and break their things. Complete waste.
Her loss was in vain. She was sent on an impossible mission given the circumstances. She was unable to save any of the sailors she was sent to rescue. It was valient, but it was a worthless waste of brave men. A thing all too common in war.
I think people forget that we only actually fought a small part of the Japanese army the majority of them we're posted in China and we still struggled to beat them.
