Bodies seen in street as major quake hits Vanuatu

A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Vanuatu, causing severe damage in the capital, Port Vila.

Buildings, including one housing the US and French embassies, were heavily damaged.

Witness Michael Thompson reported by satellite phone that the ground floor of the embassy building was crushed under higher floors.

He described scenes of devastation, with debris scattered across streets and bodies lying in the city.

The quake, recorded at a depth of 57 kilometres, struck just 30 kilometres off Efate Island at 12.47pm local time, according to the US Geological Survey.

A tsunami warning was initially issued, predicting waves up to one metre high for Vanuatu, but it was later lifted.

Other Pacific islands, including Fiji and the Solomon Islands, experienced minor waves below 30 centimetres.
