Mario & Luigi: Brothership [19] “A Peach's Purpose”

Why don’t we just always put a communicator on Peach?

Welcome to the newest installment to the Mario & Luigi RPG series for the Nintendo Switch, Mario & Luigi: Brothership! We all feared for the series after AlphaDream’s unfortunate fate, but looks like they gave it another go!

This playthrough is pretty much 100% blind. I’ve only seen the original reveal trailer, while Lenny only seen all officially revealed details. No leaks. No spoilers.
That said, try to keep spoilers out of the comments. I probably won’t read the until we’re done recording the whole series, but we are gonna try to bulk record to so we don’t have to worry about getting accidentally spoiled. So realize that any tips or advice probably won’t be reacted to or mentioned since we’re gonna be far ahead with recording.

Since I mentioned we can’t start a series without weird issues, one more ironic detail. I’m sorry for the weird audio. I messed up my recording settings and two separate audio tracks got layered, which gives the game audio some weird echo. I did re-record some cutscenes, but I couldn’t do the same for the gameplay.
Don’t worry, it’s only for the first recording session and I fix it afterwards. Only to not save the settings and then having the same problem in the THIRD session. But that’s the last one with issues. I PROMISE.

  1. I chose to send Luigi
…and it lead to my first game over lol, cause the enemies I encountered did a surprising amount of damage and had odd timings to get used to
Also I love the gag that the cast looks to the top right of the screen as is if the communicator actually exists up THERE somehow

  2. Personally, I chose peach. If she volunteered… why not? Plus it serves for the leader of idle to look up to her even more for her bravery.

Plus I despise having huge gaps in exp for Mario and Luigi too

The extension corps are incompetent so I had no fear in sending her.

  3. Apparently, the choosing your story was planned to be much more prominent, to have a theme of "choosing your own destiny". The relationship related plots was what reoriented the story towards the importance of connecting with others.

  4. Unfortunately you're not rewarded more, sending Luigi is just playing this section of the game on hard mode and both lead the the same story outcome anyway. I sent Peach, it made more sense to me to keep the bros united (and i could keep their exp in sync)

  5. Ok, it's no longer funny to hate on Starlow for being annoying and unlikable when her attitude has been toned-downed in this game. In fact, it makes you guys the annoying and unlikable ones in comparison

  6. Luigi is so great in this game. Dream team may be considered the "Luigi" Mario & Luigi game, but I feel like brothership does a better job of being the "Luigi" game.

I also like when Technikki was like "Here Mario, I designed this special attack to help you defeat enemies, oh also, I found this second thing that just kinda washed up on the beach."

  7. A rather big sticking point for me in the story so far is the deus ex machina effect the tree does to provide the next pathway again and again. It's not something decided that leads the ship crew to go travelling in a new direction, unlocking new winds or breaking open blocked undersea rockways to create new sea currents, it's literally the tree just up and makes a path obviously impassable before now passable, usually not even because 'someone wished it' or anything like that.

I can see how perhaps there's further explanation to how maybe the tree is like a CPU for Concordia and this is all a computer where the sea is the motherboard, and the CPU is making new pathways possible, but it's still a poor way to explain away logic to story progression.
