UK should get more of them imo.
The volvo A30D is incrddebly robust. I dount they needed to do anything at all apart from uparmor the cab.
The rounds are loaded on a cain that can access and program any rounds with in seconds. The maximum load is 21 rounds, that would include any smoke rounds or other. (Like excalibur or bonus)
But the system is really just intended to shoot 9 rounds at a time. In the swedish doctrine counter alretilery fire is always expected hence they are trained to always redeply.
Also consider that the system is desinged to work in linked pairs or quads. So for the more exotic amunition they may only carry 2 per quad.
While granted larger ammo count would proboly not hurt. But its not like in the cv9040 where the low ammo count is actually a problem
Regarding reloading and amunition:
In advanced artillery systems like Archer, the choice of ammunition and loading process is managed by the system's Fire Control System (FCS). Below is a description of how decisions between using, for example, BONUS or explosive shells (alum) are made, and how this affects flexibility and operation:
1. Ammunition Selection and Handling
Automatic Selection via Fire Control System (FCS):
Archer has an integrated FCS that gathers data from sources like reconnaissance, radar, and commander instructions. The system analyzes the target's characteristics, distance, and desired effect to determine the most suitable type of ammunition.
The operator inputs the type of target (e.g., armored vehicles or soft targets), and the system automatically selects between options such as BONUS (for armored targets) or standard explosive shells (for destruction of soft targets).
Flexible Loading:
Archer is equipped with an automated ammunition magazine capable of storing multiple types of ammunition, allowing quick switching between types without manual reloading.
The system can be preloaded with a mix of ammunition types, enabling it to handle diverse missions without requiring a complete reload.
2. Determining What is Loaded
Target Data and Fire Orders:
The fire order and target data from the command unit dictate what is loaded. If the target is an armored vehicle, BONUS is loaded, while soft targets may require explosive or general-purpose shells.
Archer can also execute Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) missions, where different types of ammunition can be used to create varied effects on a target area.
Manual or Automatic Prioritization:
The operator can manually prioritize a specific ammunition type, but this is typically managed automatically by the system's logic.
3. Flexibility in the Field
Automated Reloading:
When the ammunition magazine starts to deplete a specific type of shell, Archer can be quickly reloaded from an ammunition resupply vehicle, even during combat. The magazine is designed for fast reloading with minimal crew exposure.
Coordination with Other Units:
The Archer system can communicate with other artillery units to coordinate ammunition types and effects. For example, one unit may load BONUS for armored targets, while another unit loads explosive shells for soft targets.
4. Role of the Operator
The operator monitors and approves the system's ammunition selection via its interface.
Tactical or target changes can be quickly implemented through reprogramming or manual intervention.
The size of the supply chain would be a great follow up to this video. Detachments on Guns, Crews are on ships.
Sweden ordered new Archers based on a 8×8 truck.
Seems like an amazing weapon system. That's probably because we didn't design and make it 😂
Some facts are wrong in this video. I guess it’s to confuse the enemy…
Three men so who's doing Gun sentry who's doing NBC sentry who's doing QRF 1 or QRF2 that's before you start on maintenance take three to four men to pull a FH 70 oh I forgot the ammo jockeys who going to split the ammo down to put in the fancy reload truck system . Now you were in 7 how many men did you have per gun six did you know the FH 70 it was 13 we had five pluss driver the 5.5 was 11 six we had the 118 is supposed to be 10 we had five plus the driver if he stayed on position . With all the jobs that need doing there not enough men . Did you know USA had a semi automated ship with reduced crew the Freedom and independence one of the main reasons it was taken out of service was there was not enough men to keep up with the maintenance the ships were falling apart with rust
Badge over the right eye
Military vehicles are exempt F gas air condition laws, they can leak away and don't need to be repaired , hence why many do not work . The branched pipe was never available for the heaviest vehicle !
We need loads more of these kind of weapons. Less sophisticated is better sometimes.
We currently have a few over priced, Over engineered showpiece weapon systems with too many sensors and too much to go wrong keeping them out of action longer when problems arise.
AS90 can fire alot more than 6 round before getting more from outside!
3 man crew, who's stagging on cause it won't be the gun No1 and who's defending the gun position….
Illum round are becoming less used as the spread of NW-goggles makes these redundant.
The main thing with the Archer is the trade of with firepower for manouver. 21 rounds is not alot compared with PzH2000 or K9. But for the UK that most of the time deployes out of area this makes a lot of sense. And as the cream on top BAE Systems owns most of the production line althow its in Sweden. The truck is made in Braås outside of Växjö, The gun system is made in Karlskoga. Smaller parts are made in other UK allied countrys ex. the RWS is made in Kongsberg (Norway).
Good if you are against a small badly equipped irregular force and you only want to fire a couple of rds and move but if your being attacked on mass 12 of these arent going to do much ….Id rather have a battery of AS90s
Though it is good, why is Boxer RCH THAT much better? It is hardly "Only" a DUMPER TRUCK. Disparaging and dismissive. There is no 'Wobble". I think he means recoil. The dedicated reload vehicle – it is a slick SYSTEM which is not a couple of gunners and an SV. The cold and it's effects on loading from a dedicated resupply vehicle will be no more unusual than it was on Sweden. AS 90 was designed to 'fire and move" A truck does not follow you, because the AMA relies on hides. The fire mission data is burst to the fc computer. It has a nav systrm built in. AS90 had a 52cal barrel giving it much greater range than the 39 cal brl, though it soon emerged we had no UK ranges long enough to accommodate it! I think I should stop – this guy needs a visit from someone with the information depth that he can explain why an utterly different system than it works utterly differently to the unmaintained weapon it is replacing.
2:45 you dont understand how its supposed to be used, you dont reload the ammunition storage during battle, you get the hell out to safety to do that. and the point with this system is never to stand still, shoot and scoot over to next position to shoot from. you never stay on a shooting spot. you drive up to the position shoot, and leave and you never exit the cabin until you are back to safety to reload.
6:20 no you dont have extra space for "smoke". and no you cannot think of the Archer that stay and help troops "if needed" Sweden has other stuff for that kind of "activities" sure if you for some reason loaded up smoke you can stay and help. but then you failed to plan your mission totally.
7:00 Every type of round is the same size, you have one storage to fill. you decide in advance how many of every type you need. based on intel.
Depending on the mission and how "big" the mission is, sure you can load just what you need to the mission and if you have any slots left in storage fill it with what ever you want, like smoke or "bunker buster". in general you want Archer to pick out strong points. And you need another "system" to keep closer to troops and give them "closer" support. See the Archer as land based battleships like Bismarck and Tirpitz. No the one you want to give close support / smoke support.
you dont "switch" ammo manually, its picked by the loading system from storage. you dont leave the cabin.
drones might be a good idea with this
Unless the current government invests heavily (not holding my breath 🤔), it won’t make a difference. The service would be dead in the water within six months in a full invasion. Let’s be real—it wouldn’t even last as long as Ukraine’s military.
After that? We’d likely be reduced to guerrilla warfare—fighting dirty as a last resort. Being an island might help briefly 🏝️, but it’s not a game-changer. Some nations could simply apply WWII tactics—total annihilation 💥.
A grim reality, isn’t it? Very sad but true. 🇬🇧”
