It’s been over a decade since two dams came out of the Elwha River on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Salmon are returning, cougars, elk, foxes and bears roam 800 acres of newly restored land, and the river runs wild, tearing up the road that ran along its banks. For the first time in over a hundred years, the Lower Elwha Klallam tribal members can catch salmon on a free-flowing Elwha.

I have evidence the Elwha Valley hosted a mega-ice tunnel emanating from the sub-glacial Salish Sea over 14 k years ago. This tunnel channel conducted enough water to erode greater volume than the Missoula outflow. The offshore erosional patterns and low mountain pass erosion can be easily seen on Google Earth.
"I wish I was part fish". no you don't, the first time you lay your eggs your death follows.
Congratulations to the Lower Elwha Klallam tribal members for taking charge of the reclamation of this beautiful river! This is progress at its best!
The Elwha is a very beautiful and pristine river.
thank you!
Man removed the barrier God did the rest. Don't break your arms patting yourselves on the back. Jeez
😅😊😮..😢…😮..😊
That water color is amazing. Surprised nobody had a fly rod with a streamer!
This is a miracle. And yet it's not, because people purposefully made this happen. This kind of positive result happens when people work together for the health of the planet and for the health of each other. Thank you to everyone who made this happen for all of us!
Beautiful!
So happy to see this and what it means to the indigenous peoples all the way up and down the Elwha. It fills me with hope.
Fish are back! Let's start catching them for sport!
Excellent, naturally!
Do white people get to fish for salmon or do they just do all the work and pay for everything? I see a distinct split in this video.
Thank you to the tribes of this land for showing way of protecting nature and the joy it bestows.
I'm glad it's recovering from human stupidity. Like the Klamath is also doing. 🙂
It's remarkable… (at the least) that we thought we could just plug up entire ecosystems and it wouldn't have an impact.
Fantastic -this was the right thing to to do for nature and the klallam Tribe .
Please do not allow gillnets! Several wid runs on the Olympic peninsula have been destroyed by gillnetting. The people should realize that and modify their techniques.
didnt the same govt tell us damming the river was the right thing as they stole the land and violated citizens rights?
The Creator is smiling as I cry from joy.
Oh boo hoo. Benefit from the "white mans" advancements, but cry at the same time. Time to evolve people. Get over it…
The cost of removing the silt buildup was the main reason dams are being removed.
Removing the dams comes at a cost.
Power to the people! Save our resources!
Amazing!! Thank you and good work Elwha!!
Wonderful!
Can we dare to dream that the same thing might happen on the Columbia – or even the Colorado – one day? And if these miracles should happen, then let's also give them back their original names, so they can truly run free and wild again.
It’s amazing the fish could return considering a hundred years of total blockage. Were there no fish passages at those damns? If so it’s unbelievably arrogant of us to think it didn’t matter.
Such an inspiring story. We can do it if we want to. Nothing is impossible.
Huge gratitude to all the peoples who have worked so hard to restore our natural lands.
Nice story. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for showing the rest of us the changes made to the Elwha River.
Amazing results! Congratulations!
Here in Western Oklahoma, the population is really declining. They are talking about making it a park taking out all the fences and putting Buffalo back in.. I don’t know when it will happen but I hope it does!
That light on the camera was buggin' the cat. 😂
we must, MUST learn to live with nature, instead of having nature live with us. We are (human race) are still very stupid, young and stupid… I’m happy when I see 1:18 smart people doing smart things! ‼️🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶
love it, thank you for your work, good job
Who else smiled throughout the entire video?
