Sometimes the people are, quite simply, wrong. They definitely missed out by not going to see these movies when they were in theaters, because theyāre a blast.

I decided to grab a copy of Strange Days off of eBay. I was surprised at myself for not watching it sooner. One of Angela Bassettās best performances, and a visual roller coaster.
I love Showgirls š itās so bad itās good and I canāt help but watch it every time I see it on
āWhat one man can do another man can do,ā Hopkins, from The Edge. I saw almost all of these, when they were new, and their lack of popularity informed my opinion on the ineptitude of everyday audiences.

Last Action Hero's fantasy element is actually the reverse of Purple Rose of Cairo. Last Action Hero, a movie fan is transported into a movie and Purple Rose of Cairo, a movie character is transported to the real world.
Jesus Henry Christ I went to the movies alot in the 90ās, I saw almost all of these in the theater!! Starship Troopers was a midnight show and itās still one of my most fun movie experiences.

OMG, awesome list. I saw literally every one of these with the exception of 2, and most of them in the theater. And after decades of trying to tell people how great they are people are finally catching on.
And if anyone was wondering, the Cutthroat Island budget adjusted for inflation was $184 million… I didn't really enjoy that one to be honest.

I still despise Starship Troopers. It totally misrepresented a great book. And I didn't like the director "satirising American filmmaking" If we ridiculed the Dutch would he appreciate it?
Last action hero flop is crazy.. putting robert Patrick in the movie was a total genius move and everytime I see that scene it gives me goosebumps
The thing that killed Last Action Hero was that it was pushed as yet another Arnold action movie. If they had pushed it as the satire of action movies that it was, it likely would've done much better.

Hocus Pocus might have been okay (in my humble opinion) if the three witches hadnāt chewed up the scenery.
The plot, dialog were there, but the charicaturish performances by the three mains pushed too far rendering a cringe-worthy movie. Good for kids but yuck for adults.
Most of these movies are still on my āgonna skipā list, Galaxy Quest is firebmver on my monthly rotation of favorites.
I watched Galaxy Quest. Didnt like it. Bad. I dont like Showgirls. Fight Club is great movie,I remember Hocus Pocus a little,when little,Phantom is great movie,Strange Days too,Shadow great too,Last Action Hero is great movie. You can enjoy it no problem. What is your favorite '90s movie?
Galaxy Quest made twice its budget over 5 months. Not sure its a flop when home media and tv money probably broke the film even.
All of these movies were absolutely great, and I have most of them in my collection. Some of them I can understand why they bombed, but I'm glad to see that some of them also recouped it later on and became classics. The Shadow, and the Phantom were both excellent movies but I can understand that they appeal to and much older audience who remembered the characters from their childhood, whereas the younger Generations would just be perplexed. I would have loved to see a franchise of both of those characters, but it just is not to be.
I always felt that the pre=emptive attacks on "Showgirls" were less about Paul Verhoeven or Elizabeth Berkeley and the rest of the cast, and were more to do with Joe Eszterhas' massive payday and what he was "really worth."
The Last Action Hero slander was weird in the 90s, and weirder now. It was a hilarious satire.

I agree wholehearted on a few of the films in this list (Galaxy Quest, Mystery Men, The Rocketeer, and especially Ed Wood).
I wish Matinee (1993; dir. Joe Dante) was also on the list. The warm weather setting (the Florida Keys) and the young supporting cast (including Emmy Award-nominated actress Kellie Martin) screamed out "summer sleeper," but Universal wasn't listening, because they released it in the dead of winter. No surprise that it only made about $10M at the box office. It should have been released in May. Joe Dante's paean to mid-20th century B-movies is worth a look. Veteran character actor John Goodman turns in a fine performance as a Roger Corman-esque filmmaker premiering his latest low-budget sci-fi thriller during the ongoing Cuban missile crisis, convinced that the timing will give him the perfect atmosphere with which to stir up some excitement.
rocketeer crashed thanks to T2, Beauty and the Beast, The Addams Family, Silence of the Lambs, The Doors and other 1991 blockbusters.
Showgirls was hot garbage water. Many of these movies, I think, live on because they were directed at a younger audience that would not have any spending power for 20 years. Hocus Pocus may not have been a hit at the time, but the kids that grew up with it are now adults and high regard for their childhood memories. I remember the Rocketeer being fantastic. I loved galaxy quest. I was in my late teens and 20s in the 90s and perspective of what is good and bad really changes as you age. Nothing beats nostalgia though.š
I like most of these movies, but I specifically remember loathing event horizon. It was completely disturbing to me and I donāt think I would ever give it a second chance.š®
