Letter Carriers Fight For Fair Pay | Tyler Vasseur | TMR

Live-streamed on November 19, 2024

Tyler Vasseur, shop steward with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 9, joins to discuss the tentative agreement being negotiated between the NALC and the United States Postal Service (USPS).

Tyler Vasseur then joins, first outlining the breadth of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) representation, before walking through the evolution of their ongoing fight for a fair contract, beginning with the expiration of their previous contract on May 20th, 2023 – touching on the major shortcomings of this contract’s Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA), particularly in the wake of the COVID pandemic and rampant inflation – and through over five hundred days of closed-door negotiations with Union Leadership, only for said leadership to announcement a new contract with a wage increase of a meager 1.3%. After diving deeper into the numbers behind this raise, Vasseur parses through the reaction of NALC members to this supposed “victory,” particularly as an anti-union Trump presidency threatens future victories, and how the rank-and-file is organizing to keep the fight for a fair contract going. He, Sam, and Emma also touch on the distinct fight NALC faces working with USPS, and the major problem of making workers, not management, responsible for keeping profits in line, before wrapping up the show by tackling what we can do to help this labor effort from the outside.

  1. Yeah. My trumpy parents are still celebrating their supposed 'victory' while they can. They have been taught to hate unionization by the likes of Sean Hannity and Jesse Waters. Both are postal workers, voting against their own interest. I would share this video with them but they won't listen. You can only bring a horse to water.

  3. Was already a listener. Thank you very much for covering this though. The entire working class is underpaid. Dejoy, USPS President made over half a million dollars last year. Corporate greed affects everyone and we have to fight back!

  4. 1.3% increase for 2023,2024,2025 with colas. Top step carriers barely hit 40$ an hour at the end of the contract. They removed the first two major steps of the pay table for new carriers but didn’t move everyone up two steps (how does that make any sense)

I just got to step C (3rd step) and it took me two years. So basically, every new carrier gets a large pay bump and I get a significantly underwhelming raise. I have worked 60 hours a week 6 days a week for the past two years with no hesitation. And the most they can give me is 3.9%??? Make it make sense lol

  5. My whole station knows the Trump presidency is and could very well be the nail in the coffin. I think the president who closed down the Post Office would be widely unpopular but we could see a reduction in operations. Maybe overturn Biden’s postal act in 2022 to move to 5 days a week for mail service. That would gut thousands of jobs since our Carrier Technician job would disappear over night since mail delivery would only be 5 days a week.

Might as well say f*ck it and go to arbitration and fight for better stuff then the Day 1 offer Renfroe took 😂

  6. This guy Tyler Vasser is a complete fraud. He is not telling you that according the postal reorganization act we are to earn “comparable” wages to the private sector most notably UPS. We have historically earned 82%-87% of what UPS earns. Vasser wants $30.00 an hour starting pay while UPS earns $23.00 an hour to start so explain that. New hires are being paid inline with the PRA.

Furthermore, he is not telling you top step received a $1,000.00 pay increase to go along with the yearly contractual 1.3% + colas. That’s a cumulative 11.5% raise over 3 1/2 years so explain to us how these guys are stating we are receiving 3.9% over the life of the contract.

This guy is nothing but a socialist Marxist who took a job as a carrier in a seniority based system who thinks he should walk in the door and earn what a top carrier earns instead of putting his time in like everyone who started before him.

And as I am not a keyboard warrior and will be happy to debate this guy anytime about this matter so mic up Vasser.
