The movement animations in Overthrown are so much fun to watch! Running on water!
i love how half of these vids is actual souls likes and the other half is you coming up with "excuses" to just test something that looks cool, always very entertaining either way.
man, how do you make so good movement system and end up with town building game, wot (overthrown)
Welcome to the bandwagon.
So overthrown is what I think should have been in BotW. I think, instead of a horse that was useless most of the time, they should have brought back the pegasus boots. Running up walls, long jumping into the glider, it would have been so cool and such a powerful nod to a lesser known zelda tool.
great vid!
Someone got tired of playing bad games.
I like how utterly fucking weird Glaciered is. Feels like its a genuinely very imaginative game, artists on its teams must be talented people
"Get into"
21:43 what is the music here?
57:01 that sentence gave me let's game it out flash backs
Hark the ghoul has such theif the dark project/theif 2 vibes. Very cool
I love the attention to detail in the set design in Glaciered, the ambient schools of fish were very cool.
I'll probably check out AI Limit, because I DID like Code Vein. It was… an interesting entry into the Soulslike genre. And I wouldn't mind a little more of that.
Also I'm just a huge fan of ladders. Really like climbing ladders. Just can't get enough of them. Ladders, I mean.
Thanks for showing off stuff I'd never find myself.
37:04 you have any problem with that?
So i actually played and beat flintock, I can say, as someone who enjoys souls-likes but doesn't make a living playing them, it is alot more fun, i do agree that at the beginning the combat feels really janky, but for me it wasn't super hard to get use to. Especially since i went full into the "magic" tree which gave the game its own fun challenge, timing all my attacks with enki for extra meter . Switching off nor's first axe while stat wise i think is the best after fully upgrading, the one you get from fighting that stone knight guy (which btw is an enemy you should have just come back for, wouldnt have been so dull, its meant to be a return enemy but with perseverance you can do it early) is more fun because it speeds up attack animations which makes a world of difference for this game. Eventually i got one magic based so i switched to that but her base one just feels clunky the entire time. The crafting system while useful can be largely ignored and interacted with pretty passively, just pick up things you see while exploring but don't go out of your way for it. As for the story, its ok, serviceable, i think i enjoyed it a bit more than you and personally would like a sequel to see what comes next because i became interested in enki as a character, not as much nor, we get enough of her story. I 100% agree with the traversal gates tho, you pretty much have to make your own combat fun with those, they aren't naturally baked in which is a missed opportunity.
fallen relics seems surprisingly fun
The first game looks more like a Armor Core like game.
Just tried the code for displate and it didn't work. I mean I'm gonna order a havel one for my nephew anyways but damn
Mohrta is technically one big Doom mod, developed on GZDoom, which is sick as fuck. I love games made in GZDoom.
Edit: This also explains the enemy AI, when the "dogs" were all just freaking out behind trees, very Doom-esque. It doesn't excuse it because we've seen GZDoom projects with improved AI, but for two people, it looks pretty damn good.
Glaciered reminds me of E.V.O.
Mohrta kinda reminded me of the Monster Garden YouTube channel and his designs
Flintlock has this Forspoken vibes
Glaciered gives me big Zone of the Enders 2nd Runner vibes
i love ur videos but your too gentle with simple cheap games and too harsh with good games with lot of budget
The immediate comparison I drew with Glaciered's whole light combo/heat attack thing was, of all things, Final Fantasy Dissidia's Bravery system. Use the quick combos to build up power, then use the big attacks to deal serious damage. There's a lot going on with this game, but none of it feels excessive or extraneous. This has a lot of potential.
Hark the Ghoul is a vibe. It has pacing that feels proper for a Souls or Kingsfield game, but just a little bit more mobility than one might expect.
Overthrown…doesn't even remotely fit Souls vibes or gameplay, but it looks fun and goofy. The whole setup actually reminds me of an older game called Hinterland. That one is more of a Diablo style ARPG, while this…I'm not exactly sure where to place it. But it looks like it has a lot of potential, it could be a fantastic game once it's done.
AI Limit just looks good. The demo's tutorial seems a bit annoying, and it definitely isn't doing anything new, but it seems like a solid "if you wanted more of X" game.
Mohrta looks pretty solid–did they just give the M1 Garand ping to a revolver reload? Uhh…anyway, I concur, more games need to do wild stuff with the HUD. The game puts a lot of style and creativity into a low poly aesthetic.
Fallen Relics looks like it has the gameplay down. The UI feels very placeholder, and the visuals could use a little more detail/texture, but I could see it being very enjoyable.
Flintlock…has some ideas. But it definitely looks like it would have done better if it tried to emulate Devil May Cry gameplay instead of Dark Souls or Bloodborne or Sekiro, especially with the focus on rewarding combos. The visuals and concepts are there for a good, cool game, but there's a bit too much bloat. Some systems seem to be extraneous and/or superfluous, and it definitely suffers some of the flaws of souls-like games made after Dark Souls 1 (weird AI tracking, perfect-or-die attack patterns that specifically force you to follow a pattern they set and any deviation will cost you, trying to add systems to combat for more depth but instead just making it tedious [how does everyone do Sekiro's balance meter worse]). Not that DS1 is perfect, but there's a design philosophy that came after that game of "okay, we need to make it harder for the people who liked the first game and keep getting harder," and that leads to some design choices that cheapen what made Dark Souls popular.
Impossibowl makes me feel that, yes, more games need to do goofy crossover DLC with other popular games just for the fun and aesthetics.
Flintlock just made me sad, i loved Ashen so i was quite exited for Flintlock but it just was so clunky
The only reason Flintlock isn’t more popular is because it was review/downvote-bombed at launch and all the man-baby, gamer-snowflakes crying “WOKE”, “DEI”, “Sweet Baby inc”, and “Forspoken” literally just because the main character isn’t a white man. That started from the very first reveal trailer, didn’t even give it a chance before they started crying. I played it at launch and had a really fun time with it.
ImpossiBowl reminds me of What The Golf (and it's sequel What The Car) in the best way possible
it's a fun game if you start thinking "Would this work?" and it actually works lmao
Flintlock is a Sweet Baby Inc game which is why nobody wanted to play it.
Waiting for these videos like gold nectar. There were some gems in this one.
As you've said it yourself at the end, it is funny to see you try goofy games (while wishing every solo dev or team the best) , but this episode did indeed have more interesting and cool retro and modern looking games, imo anyway.
It's fun to watch these, and if I haven't said it before, I do enjoy the longer format videos too! Props for shining light on a lot of cool looking and more obscure indie gems! 👏Keep up the good work!
bro really made me think there is a goku souls like game with the thumbnail but there isnt. are you kidding me man. why would u bait me like that with the thumbnail. unsubscribed, disliked, reported for nudity and didnt share the video to my friends. bye.
sorry babe cant join movie night, its iron pineapple night for me
47:39 love that Touhou trumpet
I can't believe you killed the Lore at 39:18, what's Vaati gonna do now??
34:48 English lady VAs PLEASE DO A DIFFERENT VOICE!!! it gets so tiresome to hear the same tones and inflections every time on any anime or Asian game
Id like to say Pine, having watched many of these videos, your reviewing skills have improved so greatly. They were never bad, but you're so good at it now.
somehow the way you talk about and play games like these has got me hooked! definitely subscribing. Would love to see more on Hark the Ghoul and Mohrta
Love that silly intro animation
If you enjoy Mohrta for it's art style i 100% recommend the rest of Scumhead's games, they're all more or less like this.
I wish you posted more often. I love watching all your vids. They're so fun and satisfying to watch after a long day at work. Keep up the good work though!!
I am so glad we're getting more King's Field/Shadow Tower (especially Shadow Tower Abyss, that game needs a remake so bad!) recognition. Lunacid remains the closest I got so far, but I'm always happy when you highlight new titles in that category!
Holy shit Glaciered looks amazing!
Mohrtas hub reminds me a ton of Kill Six Billion Demons
