I think picking up your demo save months after trying it made you forget some stuff haha. The NPCs in the starting town all give explanations on how the game works, but here some of the basic: the numbers you see aren't a range, but the exact number of damage you attack will do depending on where the opposing beasties are. Because being on the back lane gives boosted defense, while being on the front lane gives boosted attack. Another important thing is that if you click on the opposing beasties you can see their moves, that's very useful to know if you need to cover a lane because they have a sideways attack for example (and you can even see how much damage their attacks will do to your beasties!)

4:50 Not sure if you realize this later but the 137-91 is a prediction of how much damage will be dealt if the defender is in the front or back position, respectively, rather than a damage range. So with that particular serve, if the opponents stay in the back, they'll survive the hit, but if the one you target moves forwards, then it would take the higher damage amount and be instantly knocked out.
