A lot of Russia is arid, and the grain-growing regions of the Ukraine would be desirable for them to seize, but the grain market these days is globalized, so no single production region has an advantage over any other. The US has radically increased grain output, and also switched over the years to maize, which is a very efficient calorie-producer. The rising obesity epidemic, and enormous food waste, certainly prove the world overproduces grain calories, and Russia would do better just leaving Ukraine independent and buying grain on the market with cash.
This of course would require them to globally integrate their markets, because they don't have a currency. They have commodities, but those need industrial infrastructure to exploit. ALL of Russia's petro drilling and transport capacity was provided by foreigners, and they have all stopped helping. Spare parts and qualified personnel for oil export may be running low.
Instead of following twentieth-century logic, they have sacrificed their army, and have endangered their national security. They have lost a lot of their top–line equipment and personnel. For the next generation, they will be entirely bossed by China, who are competent but not merciful.

I have suggested to Malcolm Nance in several posts I hope he sees that they need to take out Putin/Russian oil and natural gas pipelines that run thru Ukraine. They should have taken them out when Russia first attacked. Europe will just have to do without until Putin leaves Ukraine and pay reparations for the damage he's done. Then and only then rebuild the pipelines. Europe is still giving money to Russia and it needs to stop now.
