Pope says hearing pain of Indigenous residential school survivors in Canada felt like "slaps"

Pope Francis said on Wednesday that he felt the pain of survivors of Canada’s residential school system like “slaps” and that the Catholic Church has to face up to its responsibility for institutions that abused children and tried to erase Indigenous cultures.

“I assure you that in these meetings, especially the last one, I had to feel the pain of these people, like slaps, how they lost (so much), how the elderly lost their children and did not know where they ended up, because of this policy of assimilation,” he said in unscripted comments.

The Pope dedicated his talk at his weekly general audience to his trip last week to Canada, where he apologized several times for the church’s role in the government-sanctioned schools, which operated between 1870 and 1996.

More than 150,000 indigenous children were separated from their families and brought to residential schools. Catholic religious orders ran most of the schools under successive Canadian governments’ policy of assimilation.

  1. when I was young, I visited an old orphanage and it was well known that the kids who died there were buried there. Prior to the late 20th century, deaths were common in all age ranges. when you have an institution that is a 100 years old, was it really unlikely to think they would not have cemeteries?

  2. Left relates to right. Up relates to down. God relates to evil. Rocket goes up because flames go down. It is all relative. What is not being revealed, is how most of the world is in the positive. I promise you, pain is involved, beyond anything that could possibly be imagined.

  3. maybe someone should poke needles into his tongue. Then he might feel how much more insulting and painful that is than a metaphorical slap he got hearing about things like that.

catholic church has zero moral authority on any topic!

  4. It's well documented that Romans/Greeks are from the bloodline of Esau, they're our enemies. We so-called Native Americans come from the bloodline of Jacob(Israel) PROOF- Artifacts 1 Chief Joseph's Assyrian Tablet 2 Newark Holy Stones 3 Los Lunas Mystery Stone 4 Baal Stone in New Hampshire 5 Sherbrooke Stones in Quebec. Numbers 15:38: proves the Israelites wore fringes/ribbons and Exodus 28:33: shows they wore bells. Step pyramids built by Natives resembles the ones built in Egypt, with Sun worship and serpents engraved on them, and the Tryptech temples built outside of them looking virtually identical. Aba means father in Hebrew which is the exact same word with the exact same meaning in my Native language Tsilhqotin. All native languages have mixtures of Hebrew in them, look it up. The real Christ has dark skin, like our ancestors, which Aztecs called him "Quetzalcoatl" born a virgin/crucified and called the great spirit in Cherokee "Yehowa".

  5. People are aware that there hasn't been a single corpse found in those "mass graves" right? We need to be rational and look for evidence, not jump to conclusions and attempt a witch hunt. That's how people are sheep. They don't care about the truth or being rational, they follow the crowd who follow the lies.

  6. Some history needs to be showcased in these "news" clips. It was the Canadian government that implemented the residential schools, interestingly enough, other than supporting the staff, the Catholic Church had little to do with there creation.

  7. Why is Trudeau's fathers statues still standing in parts of Ontario? He was PM during the later days of Residential Schools and ignored the reports of abuses. Ontario appears to be celebrating that fact. It just shows how morally and ethically repugnant Liberal voters are. Sick people.

  8. Reading these never ending articles about the evil acts our government have done reminds me of the most recent with the experimental drug mandates. Our government froze bank accounts of people involved in promoting freedom for Canadians. These evil acts from government are still happening.

  9. All money that the Vatican gets goes up the elevator to God, so there isn't any for the Native Canadians. The Pope and his band of merry men are corrupt, but I don't think many bible thumpers see it that way. Pray to the Lord no matter what. Pretty sick don't you think.

  10. Someone should have asked the pope why the Catholic priests do not go to prison when they sexually abuse children in their parish. All that happens is that these priests get moved to another parish in another city. The pope's words are meaningless.

  11. THE REAL GOSPEL FOR YOU
It is time to get right with Jesus. You aren’t going to automatically enter into heaven if you have lied or stolen or had premarital sex. Even one of those makes you worthy of hell fire. Don’t deceive yourself! The punishment of sin is hell fire.
Jesus died so you can get a clean slate and forgiveness of a future sin when we confess it. When you start to follow him you have to strive to obey what he commands.
No one will enter heaven without the blood of Jesus over you. No other way but through Jesus.

  12. Pierre Trudeau was the only standing prime minister to run the residential schools, after the Canadian gov took them over from the church in1969. He ran them for ten years.

You think dear old dad told little Justin stories about running the genocide schools as he grew up? Bedtime stories from a millionaire childhood.

We literally have a live surviving descendant of a genocidal maniac that we could get to apologize. For starters.
