  1. The smaller asteroids are usually ruble piles. Do not need to drill. Just go to one of the poles and pick the rocks out of the way while installing inflatable sleeves to line the tunnel. It find a big rock in the way an impact hammer can break it up.

  2. Robert Heinlein showed mathematically how it was possible to go to Mars in thirty days,,,or less. It's all about having enough fuel for constant acceleration to and from Mars. Most people figure on a trip utilizing Earth gravity that would take a year because the ship they want to use is too small. If we are going to Mars or any place in our solar system we need to up our game and think and build big.

  3. I think any long duration flight is going to be in a spinning toroidal shaped vehicle to create artificial gravity. Gravity will be necessary to maintain the physical fitness of all passengers. Otherwise, muscles atrophy and the general health of the crew suffers.

  4. Slight problem however of massive hike in solar radiation exposure once outside of the magnetic field. Then hope that a solar flare doesn't come your way. Then what about shielding of habitation space? Mars thin atmosphere offers zero protection. What about the toxic martian soil? And on and on…

  5. Can they not convert the entire starship tanks into habitable rooms/areas/hubs as they will be empty anyway. The second wave starships can be used to take the people there and possibly bring them back.

  6. We know we can put a human on Mars at an exorbitant cost and great challenges, multiply by 10 for a safe return home. The question is why, we're on Mars already doing reconnaissance and scientific missions last I checked. The idea of colonization sounds nice but there is nothing there to colonized in the traditional sense, no fortune to be made, riches to loot, 0 return on investment not to mention the hostility of the environment. We can always dream but I don't believe that Musk still believes if ever did what he claims.

We will NEVER colonize Mars if we continue to pussy out on nuclear energy. Your solar panel calculation is horseshit. And you know it. What a waste of time.

  9. I remember reading a manned Mars mission proposal from Mike Collins (Apollo 11) in National Geographic 1988/1989 so Buzz was a bit late to the party 🎉. The concept of the Mars Cycler is older than his proposal too. Not a criticism of Buzz but the accuracy of the video

People have talked, do talk, and will continue to talk about the challenges of reaching Mars without referencing a single megalomaniac shitposting billionaire. He is totally irrelevant to serious discussions of Mars exploration.

  11. 500+ days to render the two fuel parts.
    How much of that will have bled off through the hull before they have produced enough. And is that a never ending cycle.
    Can they make enough fast enough to fill the tanks before they lose so much that they can’t make it back.

  12. How much would it cost to develop the starship mini? Are you willing to pay for developing starship mini? Presenting alternative opinions is fine just as long as you point out the downs sides. This sounds like this is superior without any downside, which is to good to be true. Many of us have been stolen from by listening to a to good to be true sales pitch.
