It’s been revealed only one of Australia’s six Collins-class submarines is currently in service, as the nation’s naval capabilities are hampered by corrosion, maintenance delays, and industrial strikes.

Although our military boys and girls are tough, we can't protect ourselves and if you think we can, you're an idiot. We rely on the US and the UK, mainly the US. The programs discussed here (satellite network, submarines, etc.) are VERY expensive, but if you adopt a longer-term view they will provide incredible benefits not just for the Australian armed forces, but for the national economy and labor market. It will take up to two decades to reach that point (and I very much envision a robust, stable ship-building program that employs thousands of highly-skilled workers with the potential for increased returns if Australian marine product creates an export market), but the investment in national capabilities will provide massive dividends (both practical as well as financial).
