USS Johnston (DD-557) was a Fletcher-class destroyer that earned a legendary place in naval history for its heroic actions during the Battle off Samar in World War II. Despite being vastly outgunned and outnumbered by a superior Japanese fleet, Johnston, under the command of Commander Ernest E. Evans, fiercely defended the vulnerable American escort carriers she had been tasked with protecting. Her courageous crew fought with incredible valor, launching relentless attacks that helped turn the tide of the battle.

Great video, thank you.
i B likN your work….thanks
Great respect for Cmd Evans, a true hero ! Thanks for the video !
It’s fitting that we have just passed the 249th birthday of the United States Navy. The USS Johnston and Samuel B. Roberts and their crews, epitomize the duty and courage of the US Navy.
It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog (or ship).
Thank you for telling one of the most heroic stories of WWII.
As a junior officer aboard a Gearing Class destroyer on the gun line in Vietnam, the Johnston stands as an inspiration to U.S. Navy warriors, which will continue to be needed in the near future.
Sadly, in today's Navy, such heroic actions would never occur under similar war scenarios…
Retired Army here. We give the Swabbie's hell, but you gotta respect those salty old guys. They had balls!
Captain Evans could never leave the bridge and walk to either side of the ship. The weight of his massive cojones would have capsized her.
These videos are always getting better every time. Could you cover the SMS Scharnhorst and her wreck someday?
80 years later…salute
I would like to think the late James D. Hornfischer, author of 'The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors', would approve of this video.
And it would not surprise me if you sourced much of your material from his excellent book or it's bibliography.
They actually found her wreck in 2019
Cmdr. Evans was a brave warrior. He and ship made the Navy proud. This is a story of real heroism.
The enemy didn't sink it but the weight of the crews balls
Thank you for honoring the Johnston, her commander and her crew 🇺🇲
Thank you all. R I P Heroes… 74 US ARMY 80
