I grew up right next to an airforce base & they absolutely do break sound barrier near populated areas. They also do low altitude fly by's but that was mostly to impress all of us kids out there watching them.
I live in Missouri not far from an Army base. Every now and then we will get those booms and blame the base. I've been pretty shaken when we get them out of nowhere. I feel it through my entire body! shudders
