Sonic X Shadow Generations Review

Sonic X Shadow Generations was reviewed by Jada Griffin on PlayStation 5. Also available on PlayStation 4, Xbox, Switch, and PC.

Sonic X Shadow Generations takes an already excellent game and spring jumps it to new heights at a blistering pace by doubling up the campaign length with creative level design, fantastic bosses, plenty of collectibles, and an appreciable graphical upgrade. While the brand-new Shadow content isn’t necessarily long on its own, it adds a nice change of pace to the collection of all-time great Sonic stages Generations already contained, and there’s an exciting new story that’s filled in as you explore the overworld for collectibles, activities, and challenges. This bulked-up remaster soars far and above previous enhanced versions we’ve gotten in the Sonic franchise, and hopefully will be the gold standard Sega holds itself to when it decides to bring back other Sonic games from the past.

  1. wow littlerally just a dlc so great, and what was the last game ? A freaking useless handygame ??? No fr in my opinion i think sega is massively milking sonic far too much and they just should start making actually innovative games and start using the whole Sonic universe with all the characters like come on i know there is more instead of just making jump and runs and that… Honestly the last game i liked was Sonic Mania that was something great but idk, its just obvious in my opinion they aren't really interested about making something with heart, and are happy about so many addicted people buying sonic stuff like zombies.

  2. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Giving a Sonic game – a good one, no less – the respect and praise it deserves? This, my friends, is IGN's stopped clock moment. They'll be back to slagging off games that fans love and shilling for bad gaming companies like Ubisoft and EA by this time next week, mark my words.

  3. Definitely had a blast playing through both games! The one thing I just don’t understand for the Shadow Gens portion, is how did they leave out adding a level from the one game that the 2 main characters of this game actually met in??? Space Colony Ark doesn’t count in my opinion because that level “technically” debuted in SA2.

  4. I never thought I’d see the day where in the same review they both show how little they care about sonic ( calling metal overlord a “metallic dragon” is crazy ) and give the game a damm good score at the same time

  5. As a sonic fan, I'm SO happy that this is good.

At the same time, it is a little disappointing that the best game in a long time basically amounts to a retread of everything the series has already done before. The new shadow stuff looks like a lot of fun, but a decent amount of that, too, is retreading past games. It makes sense, since that's the point of generations, so it's fine that Shadow Generations is all his past stuff, but – It still feels like proof that Sonic Team should really just stick to what they know.
