Morrison announces multi-billion dollar investment in new helicopter fleet

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced that the Royal Australian Navy will acquire new helicopters to replace the current fleet of Taipans.

“Today, we’re announcing that the Royal Australian Navy will acquire an additional 12 MH-60R Romeo maritime helicopters for the Navy, and they’ll be based here at Albatross,” Mr Morrison said.

“This will replace the Navy’s current fleet of six Taipan helicopters, and we will acquire an additional 13th Romeo to replace the loss of a Romeo in the Philippine Sea in October 2021.”

Of the $2.5 billion investment, Mr Morrison said $1.5 billion would go towards the acquisition of the helicopters with $1 billion for the ongoing sustainment of the fleet.

“That is expected to add to the 200 direct jobs right here that is already sustaining the fleet that we have by another 90 jobs,” he said.

  5. BREAKING NEWS: The LNP Coalition's announcement "That every Australian will get a Million Dollars in their bank account after the election" has been matched by the ALP/Green Coalition.
    Yeh, right.
Either way ,put the MAJORS LAST and the MINOR parties FIRST on your ballot papers.

The ALP/Green and LNP Coalitions do not represent us ordinary Australians anymore.

  6. Seems like this is timed to cover the Liberal Panic this morning regarding Frydenberg getting the Golden Rivet from his own seat of Kooyong. I have a Slab of Beer ready to send by courier to the candidate who unseats Him. If it is a Green, I will send a Six Pack.

  7. These helicopters was requested and are a requirement for the ADF. Before people complaining about spending on defence these new helicopters will actually save Australia tax money becuse they cheaper to run easier to get parts for and are more reliable. The current fleet breaks down a lot hard to get parts for and causing serious delays by grounding fleet. Meaning less available helicopters for the ADF. Ive notice a few people complaining here in the comments section. I'd really like to know their knowledge on our ADF as it seems very poor.

  8. 12 sea hawks which don't have the submarine warfare equipment… What a dud. Need 12 fully kitted MH-60Rs and we should be buying the MH-60 Seirra model the true naval utility helicopter. Also just 29 AH-64E Apache come on we need more when will Goverment wake up??

  9. I'm still thinking about my vote! This is not a game changer for me! With everything going on in the world at the moment, we need to feel secure! Food, Petrol, Interest Rates, Financial Collapse the list goes on! I think most is out of any government control, but at least the Libs need to promote a secure future, but I think its un attainable!
