At least it doesn't affect the US game devs
I don't know what will happen any better than the rest of us but I hope Nintendo burns. One of the greediest companies in gaming for years pushing out recycled slop content. My new favorite monster capturing genre game is Palworld from now on 💯 I refuse to even compare the two anymore because it seems like an insult to the people at Pocketpair- having to be compared to a shittier version of their game all the time
Pokemon isn't even the franchises real name. That's how I know Palworld already lost these court cases as soon as I saw it. Pokemon is the nickname we use for marketing. "Pocket Monsters". The game you don't want to copy is "Pocket Monsters". "How do they fit into your Pocket?" Using a "Pocket Ball". Do you see why adding "Pal" means nothing? That's why other games have different mediums like Digimon doesn't even have a capture or summoning thing. Most the time Digimon are just physically with you at all times. SMT you just have Magic so no need to really define anything. TemTem uses Cards but they also heavily imply Tems were all artificially created a long time ago. Pokemon don't have a definitive origin which is a good thing because that allows other games to have their own stories like Cassette Beasts and how Spirits are used in that worlds setting. Palmons unfortunately decided to again copy Pokemon with it's lore. "Where do Pals come from? Nobody knows" They copied 99% when they should've aimed for 80%.
Have you seen a game called Necro Story ? It's out on the 18th and is a monster tamer game .
I think the concern is more on giving mega corpses the ability to bully out competition via patents over the death of a genre.
Will it cripple the growth of monster tamers? Possibly.
But more importantly, it might cripple other genres if other corpos greedier than Big N see this as a way to snuff out competitors, especially how desperate the AAA industry is right now.

People have already pointed out that the patent regarding capturing has nothing to do with the capture device itself so I won't repeat that, but most games in the genre do not utilize the 3D capture mechanics in question.
The genre will be fine. Palworld is a blip on the radar only because the devs wanted to utilize Pokehate to fuel their game's moderate success and openly taunted Nintendo. Now they want to play the victim and people are eating it up. Of course the lawsuit is still ridiculous and Nintendo should have their rather vague patents revoked imo, but Palworld devs got exactly what they asked for. Played too close to the fire and now they'll probably pay for it even though those patents never should have been awarded to Nintendo to begin with.
But I don't really care either way. Palworld was never going to be something big enough to actually threaten Pokemon or make them sweat enough to change for the better. And Pokemon/Nintendo are similarly not a genre killer and truly innovative games in the genre, that involve more than generically mashing up 2 genres, will have no problem flourishing without legal troubles. All that being said…I'm still enjoying Palworld on my PS5!

There's already Miraibo Go. Sh*t hit the fan already and Nintendo can't stop it.
I hope atlus sues them then. Because they started the “monster/demon” taming / partnership back with the old megaten series.
And who is to blame? Pokemon fans… Nintendo was minding their own business but pokemon fans wanted drama. And worst part is THEY are the ones playing Palworld!
Ruining things for everybody…
Palworld is a very unoriginal game (they've been pretty bold about it too), and that's probably what's irritating Nintendo. Think about it, they tried to sue them for copying Pokémon designs but that didn't work out (correct me if I'm wrong). So, they try to exploit some loophole to take Palworld down. Games like Coromon and Cassette Beasts are LITERALLY on the Switch. I don't think Nintendo is trying to destroy the Monster Taming genre (I agree with Ed that people are overreacting about this) It looks more like a personal gripe with Palworld in particular. Yes, they're being petty but whether or not it's from fear of competition I'm not so sure. Cassette Beasts in my opinion, holds immense potential to overshadow Pokémon in the future yet they didn't seem bothered by its existence.
That aside, I'm just happy that now there's a lot of competition that's going to force the Pokémon company to start innovating again.
I don't understand why Pocketpair didn't use something else to capture pals.
It's not just about the catching mechanics, Nintendo has several hundreds of patents, and they have, for example, patented riding on a land and aerial creature in video games and smooth switching between them.
So the video is basically an ad for the sponsor with no actual substance. Cool
Actually, isn't the Digivice or even tamagochi is the original concept? I Doubt Nintendo owns those.
tbh, I have no idea what exactly Nintendos patents include, so I find it hard to make preditions of what is going to happen.
However, what I see, is that Palworld did challenge them. It shouldn't have taken too much effort to tweek the designs/style a bit and use color palettes that don't copy those of Pokemon (in case of certain Pals). They chose the similarities on purpose to have an advantage in marketing.
And maybe that was the right call because elsewise it might not have blown up that big. Because, from what I've seen, Palworld is not particularly good (Just like Pokemon Gen 8 or 9). "Collect Monsters" and "Build Stuff" are just two basic gameplay mechanics that work really well if implemented halfway decently and Palworld was smart enough to slap them together, even though they were not the first to do so. My point here being, that without the Pokemon aesthetics, Palworld would have probably been overlooked by many.
And I think that is the problem Nintendo has with the game: Palworld is trying to profit from the Pokemon-cake instead of baking it's own with similar ingreedients.

Sometimes competitor is the best way to improve gaming system, can you imagine playing the same game system without improvement but only changing new stage ,a few new mons, changing color red,green, blue etc. That's really un creative
