Hurricane Milton update | 1 million without power as Category 3 storm makes landfall in Florida

Hurricane Milton made landfall along Florida’s Gulf Coast Wednesday just south of Sarasota as a dangerous Category 3 storm with sustained winds of up to 120 miles per hour.

More than 1 million people across Florida were reportedly without power as heavy rain and strong winds continued to hammer the region. Some cities could experience a record storm surge as Milton moves across the state.

Conditions deteriorated so badly that local police said it was too dangerous for officers to respond to emergencies so patrol units had to return to headquarters.

Satellite imagery released from NOAA shows frequent pops of lightning in the massive storm system before reaching landfall Wednesday night.

The cyclone had maximum sustained winds of 120 mph as it roared ashore around 8:30 p.m. local time near Siesta Key, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said. Siesta Key is a prosperous strip of white-sand beaches that’s home to 5,500 people about 70 miles south of Tampa.

The Tampa Bay area has not taken a direct hit from a major hurricane in more than a century, but the storm was still bringing a potentially deadly storm surge to much of Florida’s Gulf Coast, including densely populated areas such as Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota and Fort Myers.

Heavy rains were also likely to cause flooding inland along rivers and lakes as Milton traverses the Florida peninsula as a hurricane, eventually to emerge in the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday.

  8. Shut that old geezer up. All the feds are gonna do is steal donated supplies and then distribute them giving the impression they are the ones who supplied them. FEMA is despicable and the only misinformation being put out is from the geezer’s administration

  12. They need to be careful walking in that water after the storm. There is a lot of alligators down there. I do not ever hear the authorities mention about being careful of them gators, anacondas, and boa constrictors.

  16. I live in E TN close to the NC border. Getting help to people in the mountains here is a lot more difficult than other places. Same with snow or tornadoes. It’s not that we’re not getting help it’s that it takes longer in certain situations that can’t be helped due to terrain and just getting to those areas.

  18. And how much of this typical storm will reporters…over-dramatize? Every storm, for some vexing reason is Biblical, or catastrophic, or my favorite(and yours)…Devastating. It's typical weather. Though these days, everyone blames everyone for the weather. Hence…climate change.

  33. This is devastating because in regard to ppl that lost their homes and businesses, they still have to pay the mortgage on the property that’s been destroyed… also many Floridians don’t have any insurance because it’s astronomically high prior to all of this anyhow…

    And hurricane season just started and they already have been hit with 3 huge hurricanes 😢, there is still chance another 1 or 2 more huge ones coming in my opinion
