  1. America is becoming too fat, dumb and distracted, China is becoming more clever, ambitious and influential. Both have problems with corruption, with the politics in the US racing to match those of Russia. Regardless, humans still manage to build and dream. This moon approach will be amazing, as the lack of any recourses there will help us learn how precious our earth is and how we are ruining for ourselves.

  2. China will never see this to fruition for one reason. China's economy is going to tank because it's "One China Policy" is leading countries to pull manufacturing from China and move it to other countries like Vietnam and Mexico, India and others. Everyone is fearful of a war with the West over Taiwan so they have already begun moving, with the big techs like Apple already pulling out and moving to Malaysia as well as Microsoft, Intel and a host of other companies. China literally won't have resources to spare, especially if war breaks out.

  3. who says that a moon habitat on the surface should be covered with one meter of loose regolith only? regolith is very abundant and available anywhere, 4 meters would be sufficient and it is relatively easy to move it with an excavator or a kind of catapult in 1/6 g gravity.

I doubt that is is less effort to adapt a cave.
the surface of the moon already has been explored quite well, so we already can spot out some good locations near the poles that receive almost permanent uninterrupted sunlight and are close to permanently shadowed regions that contain water ice.

even if we would find caves near these optimal locations, we would first need to explore these caves from inside to understand their form and their consitions and how they would need to be acted, before we even could start designing the habitat.
for the construction process als modules and equipment needs to be brought down into the cave

since they receive no sunlight, they would need artificial light for illumination and photosynthesis of plant, with electricity from fotovoltaik panels on the surface.

  4. regarding oxygen and food, when the greenhouse produces enough food, it necessarily also produces enough oxygen.

when a person exhales, the carbon in the exhaled CO2 comes from food produced in the greenhouse, that previously has been converted from (previously exhaled) CO2 into carbohydrates through photosynthesis.
so, the amount of oxygen used by breathing, matches the amount of oxygen the had been released through photosyntheses when the organic food has been produced.
non edible parts of the plants also originate from photosythesis and are "eaten" by microorganisms that also "breathe" out CO2 in a separate cycle.

it is important that all organic matter is recycled, since there is almost no carbon on the Moon.
Carbon initially need to be brought from earth, and then permanently recycled through photosyntheses and breathing, excrementing and composting

  5. I would much rather the Chinese build a moon-base than threaten the rest of Asia with its military build-up and construct concentration camps to imprison Uighurs. Let it do something positive on the moon. … 'Tis nice to hear a familiar voice and see a familiar face, by the way.

  6. I don’t want to take creadit for any of this but I hope someone is reading my comments. Please don’t say, β€˜That’s where China got the idea to…’, after checking out my comments of years past.?

β€˜I am not going to explain the best idea is to Bore into the wall of a mile deep crater…’

  7. Can't the chinese at least, for once copy our animation technology? Like what do they use to make these renders? Windows Movie Maker? You wanna dominate the world? It always starts with a fancy render

  8. Definitely need to use caverns! On Mars as well, it will save so many resources to use what is already a basic shelter from the elements. There is even talk with the Mars caverns of drilling then blocking tunnels up to make them pressured to Earth's atmopshere, so people can walk around in them without a space suit.
