In February 2021, the robot “Perseverance” landed successfully on Mars. However, this success was never a given. The film shows the difficult work involved in developing the robot, right up to its successful landing.

The new robot NASA sent to Mars is called “Perseverance”. Its mission? To search for evidence of past life on the Red Planet – an important and ambitious endeavor. It took years to design the space probe and its small helicopter drone, called “Ingenuity”. This documentary follows the rover’s development, right up to its landing in the Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021.

The mission proved to be a complete success: the robot landed safely and all the instruments on board functioned smoothly. As a result, “Perseverance” was able to deliver high-resolution images of Mars. But getting there was an arduous journey for all involved.

On site, “Perseverance” takes samples from the crater, which scientists believe was once a river delta. Geological traces of past life – so-called biosignatures – could be hidden in the rock. Eventually, these samples will be brought back to Earth for analysis. Among other things, they could provide insights into possible life on Mars.

The four-pound mini-helicopter “Ingenuity”, which traveled in the belly of the rover, is now carrying out a series of test flights. These are the first of their kind to be undertaken on another planet. Another task of “Perseverance” is to test an innovative technology for extracting oxygen from the atmosphere. It is hoped that the gas can be used as fuel — or to supply oxygen for future manned flights to Mars.

  10. I thought Humans first evolved on the mars , and destroyed it later he found out earth to live . Now human ready to destroy the earth back to Mars . All these consequences becz of greed, selfish… Etc .😢

  11. The reasons that will result in our departure from the planet Earth would mainly be linked with human activities and human's nature. It is interesting to note that the same reasons would make our departure from Mars , too given we succeed in inhabiting that planet. It's good to search for another planet but what about the idea that we should all that money on the pursuits that can make us live on this earth. Isn't it interesting to sustain our habitat here on earth and put most of our energy to find solutions to live together? Isn't it absurd or a 'bad faith' (Nietzsche's idea) to go for pursuits that are mostly irrelevant while at the same time getting yourself engaged in waging wars, unbridled industrialism, crony capitalism, and environmental degradation.

  19. The fact is humans will not explore space in any meaningful ways until we advance from war against our own kind, intelligent space faring societies do not have wars amongst their own kind. They would have evolved past that.

  27. Just Wow! really saturated my thirst for beyond. It was like ''reality fiction.'' That is the path humanity should take instead of political quarrels, I think. Love from a human yearning to be alive on the day we land on Mars! Thank you DW for making this.

If we are going to eventually make use of another planet we should be getting ready n doing the homework I suppose n Elon musk seems to think it's important n I trust him and although I'm not like him have had a different life he mostly seems to be doing good more than anything bad and has made space travel and self landing rockets possible and so much cheaper that he's already shown that as well as electric cars he's gun push us into the future with care and detail like I said he seems to be open n honest when questioned as well like trump being president don't mean I wanna have lunch with him but we're different kind of people but he knows the human personality as does musk n makes politics and space travel in a language we can understand and process too which others had us confused and unknowledgeable about so we didn't feel a part of it or the decisions

  35. That also could mean that it's wasn't a virus but maybe a solar flare that penatrated the earth's hillsphere and threw our magnetic field, or our atmosphere and actually effected earth's protection field? Just a small piece of my thoughts?
