UK military procurement has been crap for as long as I can remember.
At 17 I went to a recruitment office and spoke with a Sergeant in the RLC face to face and could get into P1 within 2 months but flunked out – When I took another go at it 3-4 years ago for the reserves I was hit with Capita in which the start date from me turning up at my local reserves to me starting P1 was upwards of 12 months. After 3 months of attending weekly, I gave up. When all I wanted was to get started and get involved properly, my local reserve unit was starting to struggle to come up with things to do weekly that didn't involve any actual soldiering.
I am American and a US Army Vet.. I watch German, France, UK and Polish news. On Polish news that stated that if America left NATO Poland would try an form a military alliance with the US. If that happened would Poland leave NATO? They didn't say.
No chance, the British military has over the last twenty years made it far to easy to earn the green lid, even easier to be a Swimmer Canoeist; 'Our' military has become to unfit both mentally and physically. I was speaking with active Swimmer Canoeists a few years ago who were telling me that it is far too easy to get into the Swimmer Canoeists where one who had just been badged told me in total shock, that he did not sign up to get flashbacks!! I almost filled him in on the spot the gutless fcuk.
One of them (SC's) said to me that he could not have done the "TUBE", I explained at the time that the "tube" scared the shit out of me but 'we' were trained to control both fear and the mind, upon which I went on to tell him remorsefully, that I had "lost" a few good friends through that test.
Anyone who believes that the British military is ready is DELUSIONAL!
'We' ABSOLUTELY MUST bring back National Service with minimum term being ten years from the age of fifteen as One has to be eighteen to go to war, thus they have three full years to get fit!
Our personal are trained and ready.
However the lack of everything from ammunition. Too enough replenishment ship!
Itās so frustrating!!
The MOD is buying shells from Pakistan and sending them to Ukraine.
Our government would rather buy shells from other nations.
Instead of investing in our own manufacturing sector.
Itās not about people not wanting to join, itās about the application process. I heard a stat the other day that apparently last year over 100,000 people applied for our military. Out of all that only 3-4 thousand passed the initial stages and their military training. That was purely because within a few weeks or months, applicants were getting bored and essentially sacked the idea of joining because the process took to long. The government or the public in general have a go at our younger generation and complain about us not wanting to join but donāt actually realise that over 100,000 people a year apply.
I was hugely disappointed in the last Conservative Government who was cutting spending on its military and stealing money from its land forces to fund its Navy and Airforce. Lets get the more professional soldiers recruited with better after care services for them
My vote is for reserve ad spend more buying more other countryās ā¦. And for god sake get ride of that middle man in recruitment
The thing is, we do have good hardware if you like, such as
Tanks
Apache helicopters
Typhoon fighter jets
F35 b
Chinnock
Aircraft carriers x2
Type 45 destroyers
Submarines
The SAS/SBS
The solider them self
But 80% of this list we need 3x times as much yes OK we are in nato and of course we have the usa are number 1 allies but we need to be able to defend are self I a big way. Yes, that list is good with great hardware, but we need more people to operate and boots on the ground, plus more needs to be spent on defence..because one day we may need it sooner then we think…
2.5% is not alot. By modern standards it is but back in the day man most of the countries budget as military. UK rn is trying to spend money on the same stuff as it did in the empire days but doing so with less money. They want 2 carriers, they want 4 ballistic missle subs, they want an army, an airforce and a navy but wont spend enough money to keep it all up. USA is also there facing many of the same issues. They are incapable of building or designing their own ships on time and budget or even right. The LCS ships were a total fkn failure and even their new carrier took forever to build and isnt even good. The west is suffering from military budget cuts and somehow is wondering why shit aint working, shits expensive…. if u cant afford it dont try to act like you can.
TY my friend! God Bless you and freedom!
how can numbers be the problem if troops aren't being properly equipped?
Itās just my American veteran opinion that the British Main Battle Rifle sucks.. That rifle is just plain ugly, itās not even a proper bullpup design. Itās just terrible. FN farts out superior bullpup rifles and the IDF Tavor T95 is just plain sexy and feels so right in the hands. Thereās a reason why redneck America does not think very high of the British rifle if it was any good it would be on Store shelves in the US.
I wanted nothing more than to join the military when I was younger. My cousin served 3 tours in Iraq and his stories of how he got fucked up and basically told to fuck off is what convinced me to not try to enlist.
I'm patriotic for Britian always am but the way we are right now is pathetic. I think we should raise the Military spending to 3.5% of GDP or 4% and put things in place to LOOK AFTER THOSE WHO NEED HELP when leaving. We are a shadow of our former self we were once the strongest naval force and now we're a laughing stock. Seriously Britian STEP UP!
16 years army of a different era and a different army. I loved my years and would recommend any kid at a loss at to what do with his/her life and wanting either a little direction or to spend a few years finding that direction to consider getting a head start in the military. Time to decide whether it's a 22 year option or a 4 year buying time while being paid option for you as those years unfold.
I will indulge in talking individual politicians down but will not talk the country down no matter what. There is no such thing as a country which has turned into shite – it's a population of people getting the politicians they deserve which drags a country down. Way too many of the something for nothing sector of the population who do nothing to contribute to the positive and way too many just sat with their hands out thinking they are entitled to everything – and then whine about it.
I too migrated to the states for a few years, my wife is American and ex USAF. We lived in CA for a couple of years and FL for a couple of years. My wife wanted to return to the UK and I agreed that I preferred life here. She's now A UK citizen and has been for decades. I never bother with US citizenship, it was never that important to me. I was never going to take an oath to do anything for the US as I'd already done that for here. We've been wed for 38 years and she's lived here for about 33 years with no intention of ever going back. Her siblings have visited regularly and would move here in a heartbeat if their circumstances would allow it.
I have visited Poland 7 times now and only came back from Gdansk last month. We love Poland and especially Gdansk. There is a vibe about the country and most Poles do have a good attitude toward work, studying, loyalty, patriotism, duty to country
(as one told me, "We know the Russians are close and would finish Poland for ever if we don't show them they cannot do so" .
Quality attitude!
The President canāt make the US leave NATO only Congress
The US military budget for 2025 is $850 billion. The math is pretty simple. The world's democracies have depended on the US to be the Arsenal of Democracy since WW2, and to be capable of projecting overwhelming force anywhere in the world at a few hours notice. Those same democracies have focused their resources on social programs while trash talking the US because of it's substandard social programs. It's as simple as that. The old Guns or Butter trade off. The problem with this is that the US now has very expensive social programs, and the only way they've been able to maintain guns AND butter is by borrowing trillions of dollars from other countries. That can only continue as long as the US is the largest economy in the world and the US dollar is the world's currency. That is why China is trying very hard to replace the US in that position with it's BRIC organization. If they succeed the US will be defeated without a single shot being fired, along with it's allies including the UK.
You'll never get Zoomers into the military. They simply don't care about anything beyond having a good time with a minimum amount of effort.
You think Britain is in bad shape. The Canadian Forces have only slightly less manpower, but solved the budget problem by simply not buying any kit. 54 second hand Leopard 2 tanks in service after 8 given to Ukraine. 80 F-18 Hornets left out of 138 purchased in 1982, but 16 F-35s on order. Romania has ordered 32. The Navy shrunk from being the fourth largest navy in the world in 1945 to twelve 30 year old frigates and 4 even older submarines bought from a friendly UK used submarine dealer. It's just embarrassing. At least the Americans have to defend Canada because of the shared border. Good thing it isn't Russia next door.
You have watched Simon Whistler before, just on one of his many other channels š
Hey mate, if you want a positive ex UK military, dual UK/US citizenship, try reacting to Echo Mike. He just built his own SA80 in the US, and he talks a lot about what drives Brits like you to the US and what the issues with UK military are. Also, the dude speaking in this vid is from Mega Projects.
I think the capita recruiting thing is the main problem.
South Korea has spends less or just comparable to the UK and it has a significantly active personnel and equipment and they have mass advanced modern equipment. They've also made a licensing and partnership deal with Poland to produce and do R&D for equipment in Poland. Now South Korea has a reason why they have such a force and that's because of North Korea, but the UK has no desire for anything and just hollowing out the institutions into irrelevancy. We don't produce or make anything, nobody likes this country anymore and people want to jump ship and leave, because we're in the managed decline situation now and there's future and there's to look forward to.
I have friends across the military and defence industry and from my whole understanding of it all while money is supposedly being pumped in contracts dictate how that money is spent and bound by clauses for example if a ship has defects with equipment the manufacturer of the equipment can only touch it that includes call out fees, accommodation which usually is expensive hotels, transport, food expenses etc. Another issue is equipment that is planned to be installed on equipment by the time the equipment needs to be installed its outdated meaning continuous faults and expensive parts because it needs to be āmilitary gradeā. Accommodation is owned by the likes of ESS and Sodexo one being a foreign organisation they state they donāt have enough money to do accommodation improvements but can host partyās and events in other areas of which the money is pocketed but never used this is then also contracted to maintenance firms which again in the contract have a stupid call out fee which they are payed top dollar for.
A case with a friend on base had issues with heating during winter he requested through accommodation which did nothing so he took matters into his own hands he contacted the maintenance company (VIVO) who said a engineer will be with him on the day three weeks later he turned up, looked at the boiler said heāll be back later didnāt turn up for another week and abit then turned the boiler back on and asked my mate to ring him personally so he can get the call out bonus. The government also contributed i think it was Ā£2 billion for improvement in accommodation in return officers accommodation was improved with a new bar while lower rates didnāt get a single Ā£ towards accommodation improvements. Another case a fire door handle Broke off in someoneās room and was told to go to B&Q and fix it themselves.
Couple years ago the forces was used as a bargaining chip to cover border force during strike action losing their Christmas and new year, border force gets payed far more then the average service personnel.
What shocked me when I was co-located with 2 Rifles and 3 Scots in Iraq was when they told me that the MOD had to pay import tax to bring back anything into the home island. Including tax on vehicles. I was flabbergasted. Supplies were "donated" to US Forces because they didn't have the budget to "re-import" them. Containers of batteries, weapons cleaning kits, office supplies, oil and lubricants, tools, etc. I was shocked.
