If they do that, how do I get to the shops? The nearest ones are 7 miles away and there are no buses. I have been driving for well over 50 years, I have a clean licence and for a chunk of that time, I was driving police cars ….. fast if necessary. An arbitrary line in the sand is not the appropriate solution.
Police officer and a car driver , yer, exactly the same. I’m 68 and only drive under 4000 miles a year
without a car I would be house bound. Anyone that says use public transport doesn’t live outside of a city . Also try doing a weekly food shopping using public transport or should I walk to the high street
and back ( 1 mile away from my house) while carrying my shopping
Well it shouldn't be taking away at 65 you should keep if if your capable. Im nearly 72 been driving for 54 years was a wagon driver.still drive for a big supermarket 2days a week as a delivery driver.passed my test in a car 7 ton wagon and hgv first time.still a clean licence today would still pass my test today.its was a young driver that killed my best friend
It will cause the government loss in billions of taxes
I'm 78 …never been in an accident …driven all over the world …left side right side , off road etc., still ride a motorbike..car ..hgv….farm machinery….take the right to drive away from elderly people and you take there right to enjoy their mobility …a large part of retiring years…what sought of world do we live in these days? we are already over regulated
80, not 75.
Susanne made a sensible point in that those who, due to their age, would need to hand their licences in, however my husband and I live in the countryside, I have epilepsy, so driving would be ruled out, but we need to get to our loved ones when it’s not always easy for them to get to us. Its been noted that that loneliness can often be a killer in itself…especially if you lose your husband or wife. My husband will be 78 this month and is an excellent driver, he would be at a loss to not continue driving! Retaking driving licences would be the best idea to my mind.
I don’t think the gent on the left of the studio will still have the same view that he has now when he nears his 70’s, let alone reaches 75, but easy to have his views now.
How patronising is that man
75 is too young to have your licence taken away. I'm Canadian. In the province I live in there is no age limit. When you turn 80 there is a test you have to take every 2 yrs. If you pass, you drive. Not everyone ages the same. My mother drove until she died, age 90.
Just seen your interview about banning over 75 years old from driving .
I currently live in Thailand and in this 3rd world country everytime you renew your licence you have a simple test to check reaction , field of vision , colour blindness , depth of vision and long distance vision.
Very simple test but much better than self certification and denial . I know of many people in UK with cataracts and deny they are unsafe..
Less than 75 years old !
Tim Privett
Wow why not just take there lives aways…Not every pensioner has ever had accident since they started driving either so stop right there
Yes, absolutely, driving licenses should be revoked at age 75 because elderly judgement + reflexes are too slow. Anyone whom believes otherwise is deluded. Also, re-testing should be compulsory from age 60 + five yearly thereafter.
I could drive a car at 10 years of age, obviously off road… + I passed my test first go at age 17 + when I stopped driving at age 72, my license was as clean as the day I passed my test.
Over these 55 driving years, I’ve driven hundreds of thousands of miles almost accident free bar an American coming over to the wrong side of the road + writing my car off + injuring me.
Older drivers in general are a menace, especially here on the south coast + whilst they seem to remain unscathed…too many cause mayhem + accidents most days.
And why oldies think, if their eyesight’s ok, they can drive to eternity is baffling!🤦♀️
Should revoke the licence for the majority of drivers!
My uncle drove a car up until the time he was 100 years old. Then he moved into a care facility with a bus. Driving Ability needs to be medically evaluated. No one size fits all.
I don’t think it should be taken away . That’s an exception what happened not the norm . The under 21 are more dangerous
11% of accidents involve over 70s. That means 89% of accidents are caused by under 75s
Compulsory retesting every 2 years after 65th Birthday.
It's the younger people that are the problem. My dad is over 75. Ans he is fine 😊. He has no idea what he is taking about. The one that has a drink of water.
I favour a maximum driving age, although definitely not before 75, PROVIDED that pensioners' concessionary travel is NOT taken away, no matter what. Routine retesting of drivers at any age is a licence to print money for the British School of Motoring.
How many older people rap their cars around a tree with three or four of their mates dead in single car crashes?
How about implementing a Driver Assessment Course run by IAM for drivers over 75 years young. Not a test, but an assessment. It would be a positive move to improve driving skills.
What a load of claptrap
Been Driving 57 yrs never had a accident drove lots of different vehicles, different sizes I am being sensible now and drive only shorter distance for shopping etc,at 86,I donot go on dual s now ,only country, round my living andwhere I know,,
Is this the Government again. They definitely targeting and have it in for the elderly.
I think with this subject there is a lot of self interest. The older gentleman immediately put the focus on younger drivers. Then when he was questioned with a reasonable analogue, he dismissed it and said age doesn’t matter. Age either does matter or it doesn’t, you can’t have it both ways.
I think there should be some eyesight, physical, refresher tests after 75 every 3 years.
I think EVERYONE should have to retake their test every 10 days to renew your licence
There should be ' I was terrified my mother was driving at 74 hearing aids Slow down speed in motor ways ' 75 she died of mild heart attack and first Stage senile .. Road tests should continue..Lorry drivers warning the wrong lanes or speed to slow ' Hearing aids check and instigation off speed limits ..
No excuses it's horrifying when elderly take changes especially with grandchildren ..
They have to fill time with any drivel .
I agree, they do put other lives at risk as well not just theirs
Non sense.
People age very differently. The sensible thing to do is to make the 3 yearly license renewal contingent on a very recent health check. There are plenty of people younger than 75 that shouldn't be driving.
theres a 90year old still driveing hgvs in sheffiield apparently he pases the medical with no problem
Any young person who is under age of 25 , should not be allowed to to buy powerful cars like Mercedes , Audis, and bmw as well as other powerful cars , they are the ones who cause accidents,
Over 75s, providing they still have their full faculties are usually the safest drivers on the road. They do NOT lose control of the car. On the contrary, they are old enough to have learned to drive in PROPER cars, long before the computer controlled safety systems of modern cars were introduced. They also know how and when to change gear, which is more than can be said for most of the younger drivers that I personally have encountered. In any case, it is the driver's personal historical record which matters, not a mere generalization of so-called statistics which are often incorrect.
Yes!!!!!!!!
Most over 75s are far safer drivers than the young boy racers that do 90mph in the hard shoulder on our local motorway. Just because one 96 year old kills someone why does everyone over 75 have to lose their licence?
Won't get me to stop driving at 75 if I feel I'm not ok to drive then I would stop but currently 68 and fine
God that bloke is annoying ,arrogant
. What is the age group most likely to be involved in accidents . Why not allow people to drive only when they hit a certain age outside the high risk group . Just playing devils advocate.
For some information . Forget where the deaths were – on the pavement or elsewhere …
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers between the ages of 16 and 17 are more likely to be involved in car accidents than drivers from any other age group. Additionally, teen drivers cause more injuries and deaths than other drivers, including injuries to themselves.
I would challenge him to an advanced driving test any time.
We are better Driving than young ones
Another ever-smiling do-gooder intent on confining pensioners to the eternal indoors.
The standard of driving a ross the board is poor. Someone should have realised that the lady of 96 should not have been driving. However many over 70s are still working. Public transport is not good in many areas local shops have all but gone and taxis are expensive. GPs used to have to sign the form to renew your licence but this was stopped maybe for over 75s that should be re instated
Over 75 should take a driving test every 2 years and onwards.
You can’t have 90+ year olds driving without really being able to, some can but many can’t
I am 73 years of age never had so much as a parking fine, no speeding can that bigot boast the same record as mine
Banning drivers by age is NOT the answer. It is AGEISM and it is victimisation. I have been a HGV Driver for just over 50yrs, I voluntarily retired from driving HGV's aged 78yrs old and I am still fit and able to pass a HGV medical at 81yrs old. It is nonsensical to lump all drivers together of whatever age, we are all individuals and all in various degrees of health and fitness to drive anything. For someone who doesn't know you, has never met you and does not know your level of fitness should not have the right to stop anyone from driving.
Is he a relative to starmer, take it from the pensioners. 😊
Just can't leave the old alone can they look at the sats it's the younger drivers causing most of the accidents!
You muppet I am 78 year old pass car 1966 . Hgv driver from 1986 to 2005 draw bar and trailer up 52 long . I had done a million car and lorry in my life . The young driver are the problem 18 to 25 .
