You NEED Variety in Your Legato Subdivisions

There’s probably a lot of videos about various licks etc, but in today’s video I wanted to demonstrate how you can modify an existing lick you know to make it a) longer and b) start at different parts of the bar. This does a few things – it helps you work on your timing and note placement, helps broaden your legato technique and improve flexibility, and also in theory should increase your options for more spontaneous improvisation.

  1. John, in your Legato playing, do you avoid playing a "hammer-on from nowhere" on a string change, even it is on a weak beat? Picking a note on a string change can easily cause that note to sound accented, though you don't seem to have that problem.

  2. These 3-note per string legato licks with 4-fret stretches are nearly impossible for me to play cleanly (small hands). I can sort of play them if I move everything up around the 12th fret! Could you maybe sometime do a legato lick with a mix of 3- and 2-note per string runs (with the 3-note per string runs going only over 3 frets) for those with smaller hands? Or do you feel that those are not really legitimate legato licks?

  3. You've made me fall in love with legato, and I've been practising them religiously almost every day! Now I'm starting to fall in love with teles too…

  4. Holy Smokes that hurt my hand…LOL I've got a long ways to go before an exercise like that will be comfortable for me. Thank you for giving me something to strive for. I do exercised almost everyday for two years and I'm not even close. I can play it slow stagato. Legato is another story.
