There’s been a design update from SpaceX, regarding Mars Base ? An update to the launch schedule was all I heard about yesterday via Alpha Tech . Starship landing on Mars, using them as living quarters, until some plan for expansion is enacted……… seems to be all we know at this point. More speculation about Mars base ,than plan.
There will be a lot of cargo starships laying about. Could be stripped and reused for storage, manufacturing, workshops, research, maintenance, base infrastructure and many other things that would require considerable sized habitations. Cover them with regolith for additional protection, …
Unless I’m reading the flight track wrong, I’m surprised that the Polaris, Dawn mission, only seems to be launching to a 51° orbital inclination. That’s about the same as the Space station! Thought it’s unique feature was that it was going right over the poles ?
Empty Starships would be provisional and temporary at best.
Better would be to get robotic tunneling going in hex and triangle patterns, and do levels downwards.
With vertical shafts as part of the pattern to allow atriums for light and warmth.
Tunneling will basically be used to create accesses. And after a section is tunneled out, then you would shift to block extraction using saws and either hydraulic or air pressure levering, or small explosive charges to break off blocks on your face area.
I suggest the reader search current stone cutting tech online to get an idea of whats possible, also search Opel miners under ground houses.
The blocks cut out could be used for surface construction. From foundation walls for the endless greenhouses, to making road pavers
Also berm retainers. as anything built above surface levels will need to be burried or bermed, to retain heat and prevent holing from micro asteroids.
Also to prevent damage from larger asteroids and ejected crater material.
Basically surface communities on Mars will be built like 1800's era earthworks Star Fortresses.
Where the stone blocks retain the tunneling tailings, and act like sand bags to absorb projectiles and radiation.
Old Starships will be used mostly to create water and fuel tanks.
But I suspect one of the first industrial processes on Mars will be extraction of nickle iron from tailings and active surface soil sifting, and used to make Stainless.
And likely then 3D printed into pressure tanks for liquified gasses.
Another industry will be some sort of portland cement equivilant made from extracted elements in regolith.
And on earth, you cant use salt water in cement, so if Mars mortars are similar chances are well water will need to be desalinated.
This might allow also creating iron based batteries or electrical generation using salt water.
Another early industry will need to be plant lights. in proper spectrums for growth in relation to Mars gravity. ie more blue spectrum than red on Mars.
They will be needed for added light for good growth, and also for lighting at night when people come up to work during lower radiation hours.
Chances are most surface agricultural labor will be robotic due to radiation danger.
There will need to be as much green house area as possible, and if built tall enough used for growing trees for wood products and Mushroom food.
Mars will be a mushroom capitol of the solar system. Every family with Mushroom recipes.
Mars Pizza will be a thing…
They have to find a way to extract oxygen from mars CO2. That requires tons of energy.
They also have to build an underground cave to shield themselves from radiation
Good Morning, Kev. I think using a Starship as a base on Mars is a Great idea. It uses everything at you disposal. It also would be quick to set up. It would speed things up as well. Practice on the moon. It's a win, win. Great Update, Kev.. Have a Great Day.
WRONG… The OORING COMPANY…. The Mars Base is Already there… It just hasn't had the rock removed yet.
You start with simple inflated structures, then move into holes.
Not 1 million people annually 😂😂😂😂😂😂.
You need aprox. 1 million people for a self sustained colony = this mostly has to do with a diverse enough gene pool to prevent inbreeding.😮😮😮
The 1 million people will gradually be shipped over to Mars over a couple decades like 50 years or so.
The first pioneers will be way less than a dozen people and I guess we will have under 100 people for a decade or so to set up the base for population.
That said there will be LOTS of Tesla robots comming along to Mars 😮😮🎉🎉😂😂
Think bigger!
It's not just the 1,000 m^3 cargo volume!
As a space station, or lunar/matian habitat, access to the fuel tanks would triple useable space
It would require multiple loads from other Starships to fit out and use this space.
In space, 2 or more coupled by an access tunnel forms the basis of a space station with spin gravity.
The first starships should be re-used as human shelter, storage for hydrogen, oxygen, and water.
Follow
All of the renderings I have seen thus far are ridiculous. A more intelligent design would be to land near a mountain or mountain range, and build the habitats inside the mountain so that the lack of atmosphere, extreme cold, and radiation are less of a factor in day to day life.
I am all in for that idea.. starship being the temporary habitat for the 'Mars Colonization' project. I would go if y'all let me. LETSGOOO SPACEX!!!
Why not just use the lava tubes that already exist on Mars?
Send tesla bots 1st
Too many assumptions
When are you going to stop using OLD stock film of Starbase in your videos?? Come on guys. You do good work so up your game and use current video of the facilities around Starbase and not some old stock film taken months ago.
This is all great ….it all depends on who is in charge of the government…. They will either cut thru the red tape or add more because they don’t like you….
Given enough fuel, could the starships RCS thrusters take the starship from vertical landing position on Mars, to a horizontal position?
Considering the starship weighs about 160 tons dry mass (earth), Mars at about 38% of Earth's gravity, making it about 61 tons on Mars.
It will be decades, or never before the FAA will allow Space X to launch people to mars. And no, Space X can't avoid FAA regulations anywhere on earth just as US airlines cant.
Where can I sign up to go?
Great episode!
But.. one mission at a time. Landing pads, Moon, Orbital Stations, and how is going to intentionally land on its side? The RCS/OMAC thrusters might be the way, but.. it's going to a lot of testing, money, authorization, environmental (then EPA will find a way to hippie the Moon, and Mars, and last but not least, life support, when there is no rendering of solar arrays in any X outlines of living on a SS. But it makes sense. Especially with the cargo payload. We will just have to see if X's parents (FAA/FCC), allow this to happen. I truly hope so.
Straight up, your the best Kevin that I know.
SpaceX is really pushing the boundaries with their new designs! On a side note, Filter Bounce has been amazing for keeping my bounce rate in check. It is very affordable and with the 300 free verifications each month, it is a steal. Their accurate verification has saved me from many headaches. Worth checking out!
Seeing SpaceX plan for Mars is just epic! By the way, Do You Mail has made my email campaigns so much smoother. The scalability is insane and managing multiple domains has never been easier. Their CSV file integration makes organizing contacts a breeze. You should definitely give it a shot.
This SpaceX update is seriously next level! On another note, for those into cold emailing, Filter Bounce is a must. It keeps bounce rates under 1%, which is essential for maintaining a good sender reputation. Plus, their real-time verification API works like a charm. Check it out!
Using Starship for a new space station makes GREAT sense!😅
If you compare what SpaceX has done in such a short period of time with a lot less money. You see the need to streamline the approval process. NASA’s spends far more money accomplishing far less.
Where do you keep the Cows , Chickens , Sheep , Pig,s , ? Also you’re going to need a lot of grass …
You know the US Government will be looking for property tax
You mentioned strong winds on Mars…That really doesn't exist there , with an atmosphere of about 1% of Earths , wind is not an issue. Good segment though please keep it up.
