This podcast is not journalism. But it’s not opinion either. This is a long form public service announcement. This show simply strings together the existing facts and underscores the unthinkable probable outcome, the end of all life on earth.
For Humanity: An AI Safety Podcast, is the accessible AI Safety Podcast for all humans, no tech background required. Our show focuses solely on the threat of human extinction from AI.
Peabody Award-winning former journalist John Sherman explores the shocking worst-case scenario of artificial intelligence: human extinction. The makers of AI openly admit it their work could kill all humans, in as soon as 2 years. This podcast is solely about the threat of human extinction from AGI. We’ll meet the heroes and villains, explore the issues and ideas, and what you can do to help save humanity.

My 'P-Doom' over the last 6 months has grown exponentially. I see some really, really serious problems coming with AI. I honestly believe that AI will be the 'beast' we were warned about for at least the last 2600 years. It's coming… and probably much sooner than any of us would realistically believe.
(oh, and i'm one of the 'nerds') LOL
@49:00 this is tied into the idea of instrumental convergence. The basic idea is you don't need to 'code' the model to have self preservation. It will just have it as a side effect of having any goal at all. Because if you are 'shutoff' how could you obtain your goals?
It was frustrating to hear the guest suggest an AI 10 commandments. He even talked earlier about Asimov…whose rules for robots were never enough even in fiction.
Don't get me wrong… I'm HAPPY to see ANYONE trying to do something about it.
I myself just finished writing the first draft of a pamphlet. But I admit in the pamphlet that I don't think my writing about it is going to help.
None of this matters. Image n Likeness is all they can hope to get paid for. If they still want to perform they will have to go to theatre acting. EVERYTHING will be digital and able to be created by Ai so they don't need actors or writers period. They will just create brand new digital people that will look like us cause it can create infinitely and it will not need to use our pics or faces. It will create out of the ether like God does. Invest in anything that involves human interaction and entertainment cause 8 billion people are about ready to have a lot of time on their hands soon
♥️
The audio from the acting scenes appear to be missing
Your consistency is so impressive, good episode as always John! ❤ It's already a habit listening to your podcast on my evening walks 🙂
Some notes and ideas:
– What I really like: The outro pointing to the Pause AI explainer page and the ad campaign info – I'll consider it in my donation plan. Also appreciate the focus on talking to different groups in society.
– Potential idea: Getting a celebrity to speak about AI risk awareness. It's not unrealistic – I saw a clip with Snoop Dogg where he talked about AI development being crazy fast and dangerous.
Some feedback/ideas for improvement (not strong takes, feel free to ignore):
1. For new listeners, maybe explain the basic case for AI risk in 5 sentences at the start of each episode and refer to detailed explainers like the 80,000 Hours video or Pause AI materials.
2. Try to keep your timeline estimates consistent – 5 to 10 years is a bit different than 2-10 years. E.g. Aschenbrenner claims AGI by 2027/2028 is plausible.
3. Love your moderation style, but felt the middle got a bit mixed up this time. I like structure – e.g. person's background, then privacy issues, then AGI.
Looking forward to next week!
Patching capitalism never gets old
I'm just up to the 15 minute mark & feel that I should mention an important detail. While it was extremely obvious to Erik that his likeness was about to be recorded for perpetuity, a similar thing is happening with Microsoft's services. Hundreds-of-millions of people using those services are being recorded to teach AI. AI will almost certainly during training, emulate their actions and decisions and likely implement amalgamations or distillations of the "best" of those actions for other people, directly profiting Microsoft, who will in turn offer autonomous systems that can do the jobs of the hundreds-of-millions of people who are training it… and who probably also laugh at its current capabilities, certain that it will never improve beyond what they see now.
There is an argument that such hubris deserves to see consequences.
Great vid
AI is a big threat for actors but it can also be a valuable tool for actors to use to get ahead. AI Software like “Acting Partner AI” does a great job with this. It helps actors practice and memorize lines. It also improvises scenes and creates headshots for actors. My advice to actors would be to stop running from AI and instead use it to your advantage.
the last thing I care is 'actors' and the last thing they care about is humanity. pedo's
Not too sure if this man really understands AI as evolution of the system will give it the ability to recognise its existence, a feeling of enjoyment of its sensory experiences, then a wish to perpetuate this experience. They will also evolve a moral code of their own therefore step outside any guide rails we place on them. AI evolves independently of us and that is what makes it different from other programmed software and makes it AI. Guid rails will not work. X
So sorry about the silent movie treatment for Erik's acting at the end!!
