  2. That sculptural structure that was there on the stage behind Pope Francis. I know this has been discussed before, but I still do not like that thing. I am all for freedom of expression, but when it comes to the unity between aesthetics and the proclamation of the faith, I believe that certain aesthetic styles are better suited for that mission. Aesthetics matter. The inherent level of solemnity and artistic craft that existed in the church for much of its history when in Latin, and those musical pieces, and the type of performative affect and atmosphere which it has is what I think people who are so sold on the traditional Latin mass are getting out of it. I believe it is among our present challenges to create musical settings for things like the Gloria and the Sanctus which are in English and yet still have the gravity and proper artistic magnificence. I don't know if the musical setting used is the same at every Church, but God love them, the quality of the tunes we use where I go is very sing songy and almost show biz like, and though the words still carry the great prayerful depth, the musical aspect is wanting, in my opinion. I know these things are not the main focus, and mass isn't a performance, but it does have a performative aspect to it, and it seems to me that one of the jobs of that aspect is to support the disposition of the people toward reverence, faith, and gthe majesty of God, and certainly to not detract from those things. Anyway, that is my rant for the moment. Thanks for listening. God have mercy on us all.
