  3. Please let me edit the audio, Simon. I’m an audio engineer and I will do it for free. These vocals are way too harsh. The highs are way too present and your “S” and “T”s are overpowering.     You may wish to have a conversation with your editor(s) Simon. Uploading videos without their full length is, unfortunately, becoming a common pattern across all of your channels.

    Whether it's due to technical issues (like software) or maybe said editor(s) needing a modified schedule, something needs looking into.

    This is not an advocaton to come down on them. Not by a long shot. More a way to see where the struggle is and a call for a collaborative solution so this doesn't continue happening 🤗

  16. 34:43 This isn't surprising, at all.

    Alexander the Great was made Pharoah by that point. Pharoah is THE High Priest of all cults in ancient Egypt. Which would include the Temple of Amun, one of the most important cults to the ancient Egyptians at that point in time.

    It would have been extremely unusual not to allow Alexander into the Inner Sanctuary, given his status as High Priest.

  17. 35:27 ALL Pharoahs were deities. They were living gods upon earth, and the Son of Ra (later Amun-Ra when those two gods were merged together). And in death they became a god in their own right, with their own cult centers, temples, etc.

    Their primary role, both in life and in death, was as an intermediary with the other deities. Which only they could uniquely perform as a living deity upon this earth and as a son of Ra.

    So yes, regardless of how Alexander personally felt about himself and his relationship with Zeus in particular, the second he became Pharoah, he became a living god in the eyes of the Egyptian people.

    And he was expected to act accordingly. Part of that social contract of being worshipped as a god was that intermediary part with the other deities. Which includes Hapi, the personification of the Nile River.

    The Pharoah was expected to intercede of the ancient Egyptian's behalf with Hapi and make sure there was a sufficient enough flood to avoid famine (via allowing there to be enough land silted to grow enough food). But not too big of a flood to destroy homes and prevent farming (thereby causing famine).

    A lot of "weak" Pharoahs were those that didn't do their jobs of intermediary properly in the eyes of the ancient Egyptians.

  33. Conquering new territory is not the same as adding that territory to an existing empire. He might have been passing through many countries but, did he install a gouvernement etc to keep it under his reign then like the Romans did? And it took them many decades to install that. But I've never heard how Alexander (or Genghis Khan,…) do this. So does it really count as conquering?

When Simon joked that he's already bought his casket and its sitting in his living room, I couldn't help but think of my thesis advisor in graduate school, who literally built his own coffin and is using it as a bookshelf in his upstairs hallway until he dies. He wrote a book about it if anyone is interested: Furnishing Eternity by David Giffels.

Are we going to stop using the word algebra because it's offensive to people who aren't Muslim? They didn't even invent algebra, but it would be offensive to change the name because we have to be overly ridiculous these days.

  43. I find the Gillain Barre Syndrome theory of ol' Alex G's death quite plausible. Some have theorized that he died of malaria or west nile virus because he was sick with a fever in the weeks before his death. A fever does point to a virus, but the interesting thing is that GBS usually follows a viral infection of some kind. (We don't 100% understand what causes GBS, but having a virus shortly before coming down with it is a common occurrence.)

    So he has some fever-inducing virus, then gets better enough to be partying it up with his peeps. At the party, he suddenly falls ill and within hours of the onset of this round 2 illness, he is unable to move his body. This all sounds very Gillain Barre to me (and yes, I do have a medical degree and have treated people with GBS).

    While I don't have a lot of experience with malaria or west nile, I would imagine that most people who die from these things get sicker and sicker until they die, rather than recovering, seeming okay, then suddenly–boom!–can't move. But GBS is very much that way. People feel fine, then they begin to experience muscle weakness, and a few hours later, they can't walk or move their arms.

    The paralysis rapidly spreads from the limbs to the central body and head. This would explain why Alexander rapidly declined to the point of not being able to lift his head. The diaphragm (muscle that allows you to breathe) is usually the last thing to be affected, and in many people, it is never affected. So they're mostly paralyzed but still able to breathe. If he had GBS, it's possible that Alexander's diaphragm was weakened but not completely paralyzed. His breathing could have been incredibly shallow and slow, causing him to appear dead to people who didn't have fancy gadgets like an EKG or even a stethoscope. This would explain why he "didn't decompose".

    To my mind, the malaria or other viral disease explanations don't account for him not decomposing, his rapid paralysis after seemingly feeling okay (or at least well enough to be feasting with his buddies), and the fact that this occurred as a sort of round 2 after a recent illness. But GBS perfectly explains everything.

    The sad thing (for Alex, anyway) is that GBS usually resolves itself. In the worst cases, people need to go on a ventilator if their diaphragm quits working. But most people never get to that point and would survive without medical intervention. Well, at least old Atticus the infantryman got to go home and see his family. He was tired of all that conquering!
