US Studies Centre Foreign Policy and Defence Director Professor Peter Dean says the aim of the AUKUS submarine deal is to act as “deterrence” from the West’s enemies.
“One of the ways you do deterrence to ensure that we don’t end up in that conflict is you need to have a credible defence force with critical capabilities that are ready to fight if need be,” he told Sky News Australia.
“That is one of the key things that will put in potential adversaries’ minds that their ability to achieve strategic goals through the use of force is not guaranteed.”
