On the hunt for Osaka street food, Shizuka explores Osaka’s Shinsekai (新世界 – lit. “New World”) district, which opened in 1912 modeled after Paris and Coney Island. Along the way, she visits a dagashi bar that specializes in cheap snacks that were popularized post-WWII, strolls through New World Market, and stops by the Billiken Shrine.
When Shinsekai first opened, it was meant to revitalize and modernize the area, but today it has a retro image. Janjan Yokocho (a.k.a. Nanyodori Shotengai) is a covered shopping street in the area that’s reminiscent of the Showa era, with retro shooting games, standing bars, and dagashi-ya snack shops. During the 1920s, this yokocho connected the Shinsekai area and the red light district. Shop owners would play the shamisen to attract customers, hence the name “janjan” (onomatopoeia for the sound of the shamisen).

I always love to see this woman here, she's so beautiful! 😉👍
You see this game Super Mario 64, I've played this when I was younger so cool!
Shizuka, your positivity and charm make your videos fantastic along with the great locations you choose.
Very surprised any natto snack was being served in an Osaka establishment. All my Kansai friends detest natto…everything about it. The taste, the smell, the slimy texture. Must be catering to tourists. Me, I love it, especially in "cha-han."
oh my god. how do you eat so much and look so pretty at the same time 🙂
Interesting to see this place in Osaka, will definitely try to visit this next time. 🙂 Great video, looking forward to your next destination.
Maybe you can go to Nikko next time? We went there back in 2019, and we weren't able to try any food in the area. It would be great to see what we actually missed. 😀
駄菓子堂バ- 一番大好き ですね。皆様は宜しくお願いします。
Omg such a deal dagashi bar ~$30 🤤
Seems the cov is really driving away majority of the tourists.
Say Goodbye To Osaka. Such Yummy Food. Excellent From Start To Finish.
Geek heaven lol
Fun video, thanks
My favorite food reporter 😋
Loved every vid. So many great places to go. Bar hopping is interesting but some of those desserts sound amazing.
Hello shizuka..cant wait to go there in osaka..food looks good..nice place to visit..enjoy your day.😊
We all here for Shizuka ♥️♥️♥️😍😍😍 so charming and cute voice 😳😆♥️
Wonderful series! Lots of fun food and great locations!
Every time I watch your video it makes me want to go to Japan even more.
I won't say that I'm an expert but I am confident to say I have probably visited Japan a few more times than an average person and I would just like express my surprise at today's video with a big "WOW!!!"!!!
I haven't been to this "Shinseikai" before but just by looking at today's video really makes me want to fly to Japan right now! Shizzy said it is "super retro" but it still seems so interesting! Everything still seems super relevant despite being "super retro"!
I would say that my favourite part of this video would be the "Jan Jan Yaki" as the green onions are just irresistible as well as the beef cutlet sandwich!
If you would like to experience all these yourself, remember to make your tour bookings with JapanByFood!
Hope JapanByFood would come back to Osaka soon! I'm starting to miss Osaka already! 😍
You kind of remind me of this streamer named kyedae. If you guys were sisters I wouldn’t be surprised
Enjoyed the OSAKA tours you guys should go around japan doing these series they were cool!! 👍
I still chew felix the cat gum from when I ran the streets of Sagamihara as a kid. I could only get it here and there for decades. Now I can order it off of Amazon 😍 Still love melon flavor and milk candy. Glad to see it becoming more available here.
Cool video. Nice snacks and food.
I liked the Kobe beef video. 😁
