Back from my road trip with over 100k images, but how many did I keep?
There was also a big surprise on my desk & DXO Pure RAW now supports the R7. Will there be a new Nikon body this August?

So Jan- Congrats on the stamps! – with the ability to better control noise, what’s your and viewers overall take on the R7 image quality vs R5 at the equivalent crop at ISO 1600 or lower? Thanks for your thoughts.
Thanks for all the info, take care
Great news Jan about DXO Pure Raw. New potentials for R7 ! Thanks 😊
Congratulations on the bird stamps there Jan did the Australia Post come to you for those photos or did you just send them to them I would love to see some of my photos to by used on U.S.
stamps .
Jan, must so cool to have your own pics on the official stamps!!! Congratulations!
Thanks for your videos too!
Echt sehr geil!! 😉
I look forward to your videos. Awesome to get some of your work featured on the stamps! Congratulations!
Huge congratulations!
I am very happy with the Z9 for action and the Z7 ll for every thing else. The Z8 holds no interest for me but I would snap up a "cropped version" of the Z9 to replace my D500 and to use with my shorter telephoto lenses like the 100-400mm and 400mm f/4.5.
Great video as usual Jan. Quick question since you have taken over 100k photos just on this trip – was rolling shutter much of a problem for you?
Congrats on the stamps, Jan! Well deserved. Thanks for all the updated news.
Congratulations on the stamps! Wish I lived in Australia so I could use them. I was a Nikon shooter for over 50 years, so when the Z9 was announced, I ordered one. I was using a Z7ii, and although it's a great camera, it's autofocus isn't anywhere near as accurate as the R5 or even the R6. After waiting nine months for a Z9, and with no delivery date in site, I finally decided to sell all my Nikon gear and switch to Canon. The R5 autofocus is much better than the Z7ii, and of course, the camera was immediately available! I've been enjoying the RF 100-500 for wildlife. The only Nikon lens I miss is the PF 500mm. I hope Canon releases something similar, but otherwise, I'm satisfied.
The Z8 will be Great. But Not for me Right now. I’m perfectly happy with the OM-1 and the Z6 II is still great for my needs ! Congratulations on the amazing stamps!
I use DXO Photolab Elite for processing my Nikon D850 Raws. DeepPrime Noise reduction was like getting an ISO upgrade for my D850 – really amazing 😮!! Downloaded your files. The R7 appears to have very fine grained noise with no apparent splotchy areas. Cleans up great 👍. Those were well exposed Raw files, with the bird filling a significant portion of the frame = good results. I noticed the head of the egret at 2500 ISO (small in frame) did not clean up nearly as well as the small bird at 6400 ISO (large in frame); proving that getting close with good glass and filling the frame still works best.
Congratulations on getting your photos on the stamps. That's quite an honour and speaks highly of your bird photography.
Congrats on the stamps! You are one of the best bird photographers and YouTubers!
Well done Yan on your images being immortalised on those Aussie stamps mate 👍🥳🥳🥳
cheers Trevor (a pom in Oz)
Awesome that some of your pics are on stamps! They look great.
I wish Canon had a public lens roadmap instead of us having to rely on guesses and rumors
Congrats on the stamps mate, very cool indeed. Can't wait to see the images from the trip. Cheers, Duade
I would like to have the Z6III have the EVF fixed so that the dreaded slide show in H+ mode is gone and that the lag is as low as possible.
Thanks….
Jan, I'm betting your cassowary portrait ends up on a stamp, too! It's just too striking NOT to get used for a stamp!
I think you are right that it will have a form factor similar to the R3, but I suspect the Canon R1 will have a lot more than 50MP resolution. Canon likes to leap frog over the competition and there have been rumors of 75MP or more. If they were to make a full frame sensor with the same pixel density as the 32.5MP APS-C R7, 90D and M6 Mark II they would have an 83MP camera, if my math is correct. Eventually we'll see… Maybe early next year.
A Z8 plus the Z 200-600 would complement my Z6ii perfectly. Would then pass on a Z6iii. Might not even sell my Z6ii! Just leave the Z 24-200 on it permanently. Have been using DXO software for about 10 years, always the latest version, and do love the highest-level of noise reduction (Prime).
Jan, I have a question for you. I do almost exclusively bird photography. I switched to a Canon 5d IV a from the 7d Ii a few years ago, because I wanted the better low light performance. I can definitely not afford an R3 or R5, but I would like to go to mirrorless. My question is, whether the newer sensor of the R7 would give me a similar low light performance to the 5d IV, with a much older sensor? I am also asking myself if I should wait to the next edition of the R7, which might address some of the issue with the rolling shutter. What do you think?
Congratulations that’s quite an achievement getting your image on a stamp.
Congrats on your artistic gift being prominently displayed and ready to travel around the world for others to see! An incredible honor and lifetime achievement!
"Let me know all your thoughts in the comments"?
Sorry, all my thoughts would take forever to write…
But maybe I could share 3 thoughts:
1) 120,000 pictures? I haven't taken nearly as many in all of my 62 years, and I really wouldn't like to! Pray and spray is just not me.
2) I do hope Nikon will keep making great stuff, because we need to see Canon get great competition. But I couldn't care less exactly what it will be, because I'll never buy Nikon.
3) I know I shouldn't be disappointed with the R7, because financially (and otherwise) I'm very far from ready to jump to mirrorless. But I just can't help being disappointed. But really I should be happy and grateful that Canon still hasn't made an affordable APS-C mirrorless which has the potential to tempt me.
Congratulations on the stamps, that’s awesome.
Congrats on the stamps, Jan. I think you mentioned that you used C-RAW on your 120,000 shot trip. Is that your normal practice or simply because of the volume of images this time? I have been reading around and I can't find any reviews that see a meaningful difference between compressed and uncompressed.
Congrats on the stamps. I am a Nikon user and I am waiting for a camera with a good animal eye AF and pricing cheaper than Z9. I take photos just for hobby. I shoot photos of birds, animals and astronomy like milky wsy, sunrise, sunset. quite like z7ii, if the LCD monitor can rotate, that will be perfect to me.
I think that would be 0.02% 😉 BUt great news de DxO and R7 – mine arrived yesterday. Massive stepup from 60D 🙂
Ooh Hello! It’s not too early for loads of people who are waiting for it. And that number is larger than those wanting a Z9.
Hi. I have bought the R7, and am enjoying it, along with my R5. I have bought the DxO Pure RAW version 1. However, it does not support the R 7 files… I had sent a query to DxO about that, and I got a reply saying DxO version 1 will never get the support for R7 files, and I would have to purchase the Version 2, which I am reluctant to do… Any solutions?
Nice stamps. 🙂
Thanks Jan for all your effort. What I do want to mention is that for countries with a not to favourable exchange rate, adobe products are not an option anymore for hobbiest photographers like us in South Africa. So that said… A masterclass using alternative software has become desireable. Maybe DXO and darkroom or some software that is a once off purchase instead of the subscription based adobe products. Our exchange rate is now 17:1 usd…..OUCH that hurts😅
Congratulations on the stamps.what is the name of the free address image viewer software? Thans
Hi Jan, FastStone Image Viewer from what I can find is not supported on a Mac. Do you recommend an app for Mac users? 120,000 images sounds like a video 😂. I look forward to seeing your stamps and coin although don’t see much of either these days. Congratulations.
It's a good routine Jan your news site. 🙂 You are more than you think perhaps 'in to it' as you might realize. Great for you and for us being less fanatic but want to know. 🙂 Greetings, Onno.
Congrats on the stamps and to 50k Subs. Great achievments.
I just deleted 77k images out of my library I still hv thousands of processed images I’m a keeper maybe too much a just in case issue lol. I’m just going on my sixth year an can see improvement so plenty images to come
I usually take 400 shots per day and delete 95% and send out the best 10 photos. Focusing on only keeping the really good photos makes you a better photographer.
Wonderful news about your work being presented on the stamps. Just a quick couple of questions ref your masterclass and presets. Are they both applicable to non canon users ie Fuji users? Thinking of investing but don’t want to do so in error. Thanks in advance.
That stamp thing is great. Congratulations.
I've noticed that your presets have the effect of making backgrounds much brighter than the unprocessed image. I find this interesting because bright backgrounds are something that I've never considered desirable unless I'm creating a silhouette. I don't intend this as a criticism. I suppose the decision is entirely subjective. The effect certainly increases the contrast and separation between your subject and your backgrounds. Would you consider this part of your style?
Superb photos and information, thanks.
I would be more excited about a Z6iii that had amazing high ISO performance. Give me a camera that can shine at the edges of the day. Make me not need Pure RAW or DeNoise AI (as much, anyway).
Big Congrats on the stamps..wonderful images – well deserved recognition(and hopefully payment). Quick question on DXO R7 CRaw – looking through Dxo information they suggest works best/only using full RAW images, have you tried both? Thanks Jan, keep up the great work.
Thanks
That's a great honor and very awesome cool news Jan !! So I have quickly checked the envelope bringing me the Hummingbird book, but sadly Princeton University doesn't use your stamps yet 😉 Or maybe they're not even valid in all countries sharing the same queen ..
About what we want next: after the recent wider glass released by Canon, it's indeed about time they bring another longer zoom, besides the likely prime 500/4 or 500/4.5. About 5 months ago there was a series of long zoom L patents. Some were like 150-600 which I feel is way too close to the 100-500 (for an extra L option). There were indeed those long zoom F4 lenses with a build-in convertor. They sound extremely nice to have, but F4 on such a zoom means heavier and potentially more expensive than your 600/4. Which leaves in my dreams as most realistic from that set of patents the 300-800L/8 which might be pretty similar in weight and cost as the 100-500. This would be an awesome compliment to my 100-400Lii or the 100-500. And I assume the later patented 100or150-600 non-L lens to follow later.
The master class video is absolute gold. I've been using Photoshop since 2000 and I've lost some knowledge of what I learned over the years. This video reminded me of what I knew previously and taught me new things that I suppose I should have learned by now. Thank you for your helpful video, Jan. I don't feel as stupid as I used to when using Photoshop now. 🙂 I only have the older CS3 version, but it seems to have most of the same functionality. Thank you, again for the helpful tutorial.
