Why play indie games: what makes indie gaming great?

Indie games are very dear to my heart. They tell amazing stories, have diverse characters, and foster human connections with small teams of game developers. Indies made me fall in love with gaming, so when it comes to indie games vs AAA, I’m team indie game every time.

  1. I have to totally agree with you! I prefer indie games for so many of the reasons you described. I love supporting smaller companies and they are the people that really do need our support and love. Indie games are honestly so unique and I find they can get away with a lot more gameplay mechanics than a AAA game.

There's always something new to find with indie games and they don't break the bank! Gosh, I just adore them 😍

I love this video! Thank you so much for your content and sharing your opinions 💜

  2. I think you're right on the money.

The main point that I agree with the most is that indie studios have the FREEDOM to make games that have a more niche appeal.

Triple A has it's own appeal. I love Elden Ring, I loved the new God of War, but if I want an experience that is new and interesting I always turn to indie games.

    Great video!

  3. There can be gems in both: a AAA that breaks the mold, or a indie that rises above the flood of low quality indie games. But generally I would agree there are currently more gems coming from indie devs than AAA.

  4. Thanks for the recommendation. I really enjoyed both Mutazione and "Night at the Hot Springs". I will have to look up some of the others. Might have to pick Cozy Grove up again. That one I did not care that much for. Sorry 😄

  5. 👋 Hey there, here from your TikTok. I wouldn’t say indies are better, but I definitely hold them in the same regard as AAA titles. Quality is the factor, not budget or dev team size. I just recently got back into game like you, so I haven’t played too many console/PC titles. Since I only have a Nintendo Switch at the moment, the only AAAs I’ve played are Nintendo ones, and I’ve had a great time with all of those. I think the biggest thing is that people think that AAA equals good game, which is far from the truth.

  6. I'm studying to become a game dev and I totally agree with you with everything.

Indie games offer a much broader inspiration for me. They're way more inclusive and have much more original art styles, mechanics, narratives and characters. And the working conditions are way worse in the AAA world, with lots of absurd content restrictions, crunch and alienation from the game.

    Thanks for this video

  7. Great video!

I never really compared indie vs AAA, but that's because, like you, I didn't know the indies existed. I played games growing up, but when the early 2000s came around and online gaming became more popular, all the games being released seemed to be MMOs. I felt like games just weren't made for me anymore.

Fast forward 15 years, and I gave Life is Strange a go, and then I tried Ori and the Blind Forest. Then, the game-changer (literally?), Hollow Knight. I went down the rabbit hole of indies and never
    came back out again.

It's super rare that I'll play a AAA now, maybe one a year. This year is the year of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla apparently, because that's how long it's going to take me to finish it 😅

  8. When I was young I played exclusively AAA tittles until 2013 when I bought a PS Vita, which didn’t have many AAA games, but it had a ton of indie support, so it basically became my indie machine, I downloaded Sound Shapes, Guacamelee and Fez and instantly fell in love with indies, they are the breeding ground for innovation in gaming. They take their budget and scale limitations and use it to explore new mechanics, art-styles and narratives.

  9. I like to play AAA games, some of them are really good. But I totally agree with you that indie games are just special. Most of the time, AAA games follow a kind of formula and end up being very similar to each other. And with indie games we have much more variety and innovation. You made a very good point about representation in indie games. They really are way ahead of AAA games in that sense. That's the magic of indie games for me, making me experience new things and being touched by stories about people different than me. I think indie games make me have deeper experiences while playing.

I loved the video and I'm really enjoying your channel. Hope to catch a live stream soon 💜

  10. That makes so much sense. I wish that indie games were easier to “research” like widely-reviewed AAA games are, but the plunge is so much easier. I won’t force myself to play a game till I hate it if I only spent $3 on it

  11. Great video and thanks for sharing your perspective! I love Nintendo games and have been feeling FOMO from missing the last two Pokemon games, but I have been able to get new indie games that aren't $80 but give such an incredible and unique gameplay.

  12. I totally agree with everything you said, the price especially. When a new triple A game comes out, I end up watching like 3 reviews, a few tech analyses to make sure its not a terrible port or has some other weird issue and then still normally wait for it to be like $40. With a $10 indie? I'll just buy it without much thought haha
