  1. To provide some further clarification – even in idol culture they used to call it "retirement" when an idol quit. "Graduation" started being used in the 90s by supergroups like Morning Musume. These groups had dozens of members, but also had an age limit so when a member turned 20 (or 24 or whatever) they would "graduate" to the next phase of their career. Sometimes that was retirement, but sometimes it would be moving to a different group, getting a solo contract or switching to acting.

Now it's just a euphemism for quitting, but at one point it meant something closer to moving on to bigger and better things.

  2. There's a bunch of weird hang-ups from Idol culture that has always weirded me out over some Vtuber stuff, like the "let's pretend she's our girlfriend" thing, where dudes will get angry if a vtuber is revealed to have a boyfriend irl. And if you point out to them that it's weird for them to invest so much infatuation in a literal artificial performance, they'll give you some shit about not understanding it or whatever.

  3. For anyone wondering, there is evidence of Vtubers being alive after graduation.

Often times, Vtubers will start over under a new alias after graduating from an old one. This is done for a number of reasons but most commonly Independant Vtubers will sign up with an agency and they have to drop their current character for one owned by the company. Likewise, when they leave the agency, they leave behind the character and can either go back to their old one or make a new one entirely. It is also considered taboo to discuss topics that relate to the old character, AKA The Past Life.

For specific examples, I recommend looking up the history of the Vtubers in VShoujo.

  4. It honestly only gets worse, since that character then remains the IP of the agency, the V-Tuber then has to dance around that character later in that career.

Best example being Dokibird having no idea why people accidently call her Selen Tatsuki.

They are essentially Unpersoned through capitalism.

  5. jokes aside a good amount of them leave one vtuber persona for one reason and then reappear as another at another company as a new persona

i won't list any names since the kayfabe and the lack of knowing the person behind the model on a personal level is intentionally part of the experience but sometimes you can pick it up pretty easily and at least for some of the english ones it's pretty clear they aren't that pressed if you figure something out.

memories of a particular one retiring shortly after a very minor scandal and people getting mad at the people who dared to get mad… only for like a month later a suspciously similar voice debuted at a new company and it was pretty obvious "oh she just had a new job lined up probably over contract disputes lol"
