What about when Luffy falls asleep during a backstory? Does he just hear the first part as "I was wronged by so and so because of this" and just tunes out?

This works as a great contrast to Luffy's infamous falling asleep during the FMI backstory, there he didnt need any details he had already met Shirahoshi and Jinbei and knew they were hurting, he just needed a name of the guy to punch. This even works earlier! with how he handles Nami, sure he walks away from Nojiko explaining the past because he doesn't care about anyone's baggage once he's decided they're on his crew, but what little he does know, from Nami herself in Orange Town, she likes money, and she hates pirates because she lost someone to them; all he needs after that is her request. I dont want to make Luffy come across as too thoughful, he did shove a big stake into Laboon's scars without warning, but I like to think he would have at least shouted "Clench those Teeth!" beforehand… if he could speak whale at the time

All luffy cares about when someone hurting is who he needs to punch.
If the one hurting them the most is themselves or their past that then needs a little bit more thought on what can be punched though punching the person seems to bring them back to the moment
I know there's a lot of talk about Luffy having ADHD because he's hyper and forgetful and whatever. But as someone with ADHD this is I feel like this one of the most ADHD things he does, when he needs to truly listen to something he appears to not be paying attention at all because focusing on looking at people or what he's doing with his hands would just distract him from the words being said

My favorite trait of Luffy, and the reason he makes a perfect captain and main character, is his emotional intelligence. He truly sees people, hears them, understands when they're being real and when they have their walls up.
Luffy is the Shounen protagonist I most want to have as a friend. 'cause he would get me.
I've always liked how Luffy is not very good at the "knowledge" intelligence, but he has a lot of "emotional" intelligence. He always knows what people are truly feeling.

i can relate a lot to luffy here honestly. quietly listening and doing things without a word of explanation
… also i've grown a habit of jokingly typing his name out as it's pronounced as "loofy" so much i forgot that's not actually how it's spelled
Reading One Piece and paying attention to how Luffy reacts to things is a fun venture. My favorite is Luffy getting immensely invested in the history of Wano, to the point he makes whole speeches to rouse the masses. It goes extremely well with the narrative that "Wano is the first country where dawn arrives".
