I don't know the answer. But I do know China puts a lot of effort in trying to beat the US and Eastern African countries in track and field events and in the Olympics.
We have a symbiotic relationship with China. Our economies support each other. It would come down to who could win on the economic front.

Population density isn't a strength against a foe with the ability to saturate an area with supersonic fragmentation and lethal overpressure.
If you don't know, the U.S. Navy knows every single one of those ships locations. EVERY single one of them. And if China does go to War with Japan, SKorea, Vietnam, and the Philippines, the U.S., and the entire South China Seas Alliance, will sink every single one of them, almost immediately, simultaneously. Most of them are barely operable anyways.
U.S. ships receive occasional repairs, as they are MADE TO LAST, while the Chinese Navy requires nearly yearly repairs and are higher maintenance.
Then there is the military, which due to the One-Child-Household Act for the last from the 70s until the early 2010s, are lacking new willing recruits, most of which are in for the bare minimum, and then leave, entirely. The amount of corruption has also shown that Chinese are incompetent. Yeah, U.S. military has rampant corruption, but it is far less overt, and meant to get things done. U.S. Militaries also tend to imbue Patriotism, while China's… not so much. The Chinese are more likely to face U.S. forces and promptly surrender.
There is also the Training, U.S. Army and Marines receive EXTENSIVE training, and are renown for being able to take on just about any force, especially in a 1 vs 100 fight. You can send 100 Chinese units to fight a single U.S. unit, and the only reason the U.S. unit would lose, would be lack of ammunition… but then still take out another few units in outright hand-to-hand combat. They will NOT surrender. Chinese units, as previously stated, WILL surrender.

There is a military assumption that states if china goes rogue its people will die of starvation because a famine due to international sanctions. So they should be more worried about food than bullets and try to play more nicely, just a thought.

Another flip-flop by the Infographics Show. Just 3 months ago they released a USA/CHINA military comparison that blasted China’s military for incompetence, corruption, and a lack of trained personnel. That’s in addition to the fact that China’s military has no officers with combat experience.
Now they’ve switched to telling us how big and scary China’s military is. 🙄
Everybody forgets to mention that China lacks substantial real-world, modern combat experience. Minor border skirmishes with India are not significant in this context. In contrast, the United States significantly surpasses all other nations in terms of combat experience.
These 2 won’t go to all out world war but anyone think a China or a U.S. can’t take an island off their own coast is ludicrous. What’s the point to stop a 400 ship navy with the strongest land army and thousands of modern fighter jets superpower in the 2030s and 2040s?

The way things are going, China will double their military budget and triple production rates … and quadruple their rate of developing next generation equipment from lessons learned in Ukraine.
