FREE GUY (2021) MOVIE REACTION – WE DIDN'T EXPECT TO LAUGH THIS HARD! – First Time Watching – Review

Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to Free Guy (2021). This incredibly funny movie starring Ryan Reynolds was filled with surprises and references!

Directed by Shawn Levy, ā€œFree Guyā€ (2021) follows Guy, a bank teller who discovers he’s actually a non-playable character (NPC) in a chaotic open-world video game. The film has a cool premise that kind of reminded us of ā€œThe Matrixā€ movie. Ryan Reynolds brings his comedic genius into it and gives it his all.

The film feels like a love letter to not only gaming and more specifically indie developers but also a love letter to huge IP’s like Marvel’s Avengers, Star Wars etc. We got some solid performances here with the cast including Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, and Taika Waititi.

This was such a great time and we truly went nuts with how many references they managed to squeeze in! Sit back and relax and join us as we experience ā€œFree Guyā€ for the first time!

  3. I loved the slightly blurred Aviation Gin bottle on the sidewalk as a power up when Guy approaches the Players' Hub the first time. (Ryan was an owner when the film was in production.)

And the Marvel + Star Wars references at the end would never have happened if Disney hadn't bought 20th Century Fox.

From a story on Shawn Levy(the director):
"We had come up with this idea once Disney bought Fox. Ryan and I were like, 'Well, how can we work this to our benefit?' And we're like, oh, what if we tried to put something from Marvel or Lucasfilm in the movie? So we wrote a letter to Bob Iger, Kevin Feige, and Kathleen Kennedy. And the letter basically was like, 'Dear sirs and madam, would you possibly consider giving us permission to use Cap’s shield or Hulk’s fist or a lightsaber? Sincerely yours, Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy.' To our astonishment. They came back and said yes. And we said 'Which one?' and they said all of them. "

  5. Not sure if you mentioned it in the video, but you noticed a lot of the star cameos, but didn't realize "Steve" (Joe Keery) from Stranger Things played Keys. Maybe you guys haven't watched Stranger Things yet.

  6. This movie was finishing up right around when Disney bought Fox. Because of that, Ryan went to Disney and asked to use a bunch of stuff for the ending scenes.

Ryan: Hey, Disney…how much of your properties can I use as references in this movie?
    Disney: Yes.

See…they DO make good decisions at times. Broken clock is right twice a day, and all.

As for Evans' cameo…he happened to be in town during the final phases of the shoot, and Ryan just got in touch with him on a whim and asked if he'd like to stop by. While he was there, they all decided it would be fun to shoot a quick bit of him reacting to the shield.

  7. Channing Tatum,Dwayne Johnson,Hugh Jackman,Tina Fey as the mother of that gamer ,John Krasinski, Chris Evans and a Gossip girl reference where Blake Lively's character kicks Ryan's character in his nuts.
    It's all in this movie.šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
One of the best Video game based movies ever…..ā¤

The references and Easter eggs in this movie are insane.

By the way , Ryan Reynolds repayed Chris evans with a cameo in a movie called "Ghosted" starring Chris himself and Ana de Armas.šŸ˜‚
    Movie wasn't good though.I wouldn't recommend it.

  8. You NEEEEED to write a screenplay, or some kind of treatment relating to a sequel for this movie (and maybe pitch it to them somehow)!!! I think the idea of revisiting this world and seeing how quickly it evolves, and develops is a phenomenal idea. And it's a fantastic commentary on the benefits, and or fears related to AI learning so exponentially. You could have the devs writing new games based on the ways in which Guy's world has evolved, including new technologies, and ideologies developed as a result of the rapid advancements made by the characters in his world. I would definitely pay to see that. … And definitely pitch some recurring cameos. Jack Septiceye, Pokemane, Markiplier, Ninja are all great content creators, and deserve more recognition. IMHO

  9. As so many other commenters have said, this movie had no right being this freaking GOOD!! What a hilarious joyride with so much heart. I was so amped to see your reactions to the "Marvel section" of Guy's fight with Dude, specifically Chris Evans' hysterical cameo, and you did not let me down! Love you guys!! 😊

  10. Great to get a reaction form true gamers. I loved this movie when it came out and still love it just as much today.
See you in your next reaction.
P.S. I did see a video where to test if you are talking to an A.I. or real person we are going to have to change the way we speak to a non-logical way like Yoda; 'Freaky the way of talking are we being' as an A.I. will not be able to understand it as quickly as a person will be able to.

  11. @TMK regarding your comment, ''A.I. is developing so fast!'' – true A.I. has not yet been created. what you're referring to is still just brilliant programming

  12. I used to code a MUD back in the day (think like World of Warcraft, but with a much, much smaller player base – 30 to 40 online at any one time – and text only, you had to read everything). I was constantly adding new stuff to the game, that I wasn't advertising to the players, so that there were a lot of fun surprises. One of my favorites involved the character Ash from Army of Darkness/Evil Dead. I had him wandering around in the initial zone, randomly saying lines from the movies. It was one of the earliest things I wrote as I was learning to code. Some months after adding Ash, I added a small bit of code. Any time that Ash was in the same room as a female player character, there was a very very tiny chance that he would suddenly say "Gimme some sugar, baby" and use the "french" social on the character, which gives the target a french kiss. I added the code, then waited. Days later, unfortunately while I wasn't online, it triggered. A bunch of other characters were there as well, so I heard back what happened. The target was completely wigged, because Ash doesn't DO that, he's not CODED to do that! Every time I see the kiss scene from this movie, I'm reminded of that moment, and how fun it was to code in little surprises for the players to experience that kept things fresh and exciting.

  13. 6:30 the girls are the directors daughters. They must’ve loved this role that they can say (or act like they’re saying) cuss words and not get in trouble. 40:34 I love how they had him wearing a blue shirt in this scene.

  15. Guy (the Good Guy) represents Jesus… stick with me for a sec. He is the programmer’s version of himself or herself in the game (Jesus was God’s version of himself in our ā€œgameā€ called life). He is teaching the other NPCs the code to life just like how Jesus teaches us the code of life (if you believe in Jesus, that is. I’m just explaining my interpretation). Good Guy is the fail safe to the stolen code from the programmers. Maybe Jesus represented the fail safe to God’s stolen code (aka Lucifer’s world)?

  16. If you loved this movie you should check out another movie called "Ready Player One", it's another gaming movie with at least 300 easter eggs in the movie, if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend you watching, if you've haven't watched it yet

  18. Just subscribed today and man I enjoy your reactions. If I had a wish I would love to see your reactions on movies of Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Shaun of the dead (Cornetto trilogy)) or Wes Anderson (Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, etc.). Those are two of my favorite directors of all time (besides e.g. Quentin Tarantino and Jackie Chan).

  20. I loved the references and cultural moments. I was waiting for these two to say the word: SIMS. A game where you watch AI live their lives is called the sims. There is interactions that the player can make decisions, but its mostly ai people living.

  21. 28:29 – A plot hole to be sure. Given the fact that the guy they got the video clip from was animating as if he was really excited even though IRL he would've just been standing there, not all interactions are represented 100% accurately. I like to think that she tried to perform a grab move like the human shield in the Saint's Row games and he just bumped into her face, but that was enough to bring back the memories, which caused his behavior to change from a standard NPC, canceling the normal animation, and turning it into an actual kiss.

28:54 – In addition to the stolen code plotline and game assets being made inaccessible rather than outright deleting them, another really realistic and awesome detail of the movie is that little details like that 1 million % do get overlooked sometimes by devs. The fact that they addressed it at all was a nice touch, but foreshadowed it with such innocuous behavior so that it feels entirely organic and an interesting discovery is just fantastic.
