Finally somebody being honest about the actual danger of fentanyl
Watching this again after seeing that news story about the Kentucky woman who claims touching a dollar bill covered in Fentanyl nearly killed her
But where will the private prison executives get their bonuses? Think about them! Are they supposed to get by with only 2 yachts? How can they face their neighbors when they see them at the country club?
I usually agree with John Oliver on most things, but this is one i just cannot wrap my head around to support.

Treatment shouldn't be a choice. If your kid is sick and refuses their medicine, you don't go "ok sweetie, whatever you like".
You force them to take it because that's objectively the best thing for them, whether they realize it or not.
We're supposed to want what's best for society as a whole and that means forcing the objectively right option upon people who, for some reason, don't perceive it as such.
Dude the US still has drug problems?? How? Just put Drug use and possession under the death penalty. I'm from Singapore and we have solved the drug problem.
I like this show because it reminds me how funny and dumb America and why I will avoid setting foot in America as much as I possibly can yet always stay up with the latest gossip from the country as I watch it turn into oblivion.
America is like that movie Idiocracy which I think was the point of that movies. Yet, now I think it was only America that descended to that level while the rest of the world is just happy living and watching America like its the Hunger Games.

People in those videos talking about HRCs are very short sighted. Sure, on surface it might look like a ridiculous idea, but as with many things, you shouldn't go by what the surface shows. Many of those addicted will do it anyway it's arguably better for them to do it in a safe environment not only for them, but also for everyone else. You would rather people that are addicted to shoot in an alley next to your kid's kindergarten? Leave a used needle there? Or even worse, overdose there? Didn't think so. It's a win-win situation that also provides actual help with breaking the cycle of addition when the person feels that they want to. And honestly just seeing someone treating them like actual humans, when probably they were deprived of that for some time due to their addiction, might be enticing enough to think of getting back on track. I'm all up for HRCs and hope people will understand their importance.
Who gives a shit. If you're dumb enough to start doing heroine or fentynol you deserve what happens. How many of these low life's are going to turn their lives around and be productive members of society? How much effort from non addicts would it take to reach even 10% success? How many useful adults would we be busy helping these loosers? These are humans who chose to do heroine. Personal responsibility and accountability doesn't get thrown out the window because the thing that everyone told you was highly addictive turned out to be, you guessed it, highly addictive. On a battlefield you want to wound the enemy so that more of the enemy had to assist the injured soldier. That's how you break a nation too. Poison the population and the useful citizens will stop to help the lesser citizens.
This state of things sounds a lot like it's intentional. Get people scared of drugs, demonize drug users, etc. etc. all to "clean up" the "lowlives" of the country. Doesn't matter whether they die or end up in jail, as long as they're out of our lives. Jails are profitable after all. – So they're intentionally misinforming the public so that people DO DIE, and they don't have to take responsibility for the genocide taking place. Y'know, typical human empire stuff.
Yeah I'm entirely convinced that the American government (both parties) are interested in killing off/enslaving the lowest of the lower class. Dead weight otherwise. People are a resource after all.
It's a pretty unsettling topic. I'm no stranger to drug users even though I've never done these hard life ruining drugs, I've seen all the types that have. But you have to ask what is the goal? You want to be safe firstly and you want your community to be safe and that means less disease spreading, less deaths, less drug users overall, less misinformation etc etc and the facts just prove that harm reduction is better than any other measures we have tried, for ourselves and for those in such a bad place they have turned to drug use.
Something is causing more deaths than guns in America? we gotta fix that, those are rookie numbers!

Government-run safe consumption sites, though? I'm skeptical…
We've been living through that experiment here in San Francisco, where I live. We don't have a government-run safe consumption site, but we have tons of city-funded harm reduction programs that distribute clean needles, tourniquets, Narcan, and education in use. We also have special emergency teams to revive overdoses. We also offer free housing, and for those waiting for housing (or for those who don't want housing), camping on sidewalks. Using drugs is essentially decriminalized here, as is low-level dealing.
The problem with what we're doing is, it isn't logical at scale, I feel like. We've created an environment that's very friendly and accommodating towards drug addiction. We've basically followed the John Oliver playbook here. But like, just walk around our city. The tenderloin is a mess, of course, but it's not limited to that neighborhood: You'll find passed-out young men sleeping awkwardly against buildings, obviously on an opioid high. You'll find persons possibly on uppers yelling at no one, wandering into traffic.
I just don't think harm reduction alone is a valid strategy. It has to be paired with some way of compelling people to get treatment. Continuing to enforce drug possession laws, with drug courts (that is, diversion to treatment), seems like a better strategy. (And I think it used to be the liberal one, in the 00's.)
The US Government needs people to be disconnected from reality so they have bodies to fight in thier wars and continue the cycle of bullshit capitalism. All this shit is related, its all connected. I'm not saying all people in the government are bad but what I am saying is that the majority of good in government have thier hands tied bc of all the bullshit before. The fucking constitution was written on hemp paper for crying out loud.
The bottom line in US politics is money, it always has been, if the congressmen and women can't gain some finicial benefits from passing a law, then why bother, right? Think about it, name a 1st world country without universal healthcare. Shit other countries send kids to college for FREE!!!!! What does it cost to attend the University of Miami out of state LMAO!!!
We poor people are constantly under attack and a good majority either know the reality or choose to ignore it and rather do drugs and I can't not say that the bad thing to do bc i mean look around, you see rich people signing up to join the military? fuck, do see them even working at all now? half our population under 30 is fucking ig influencers or twitch gaming twats. Great society we are fucking building here.

In this case, holding on to bias relating to drugs and wheeling out the same old tired arguments and tactics that haven't tackled the problem. What John has proposed is reasonable and seems better than the current approach; I'll never understand why we can't move towards practical solutions as a species.
As a professional in this field, I gotta say, it's sad when comedians get their facts more straight than police, EMS professionals, ER staff, Social workers, legislators, teachers, and doctors
My mom had passed due to fentanyl usage. I wish we could all get together here and stop stigmatizing the addiction to drugs and just open our ears and listen. If drugs weren't so stigmatized, and my mom was able to sit next to a professional and do the drug she and my stepdad did, they both would still be here today. What we should be going for is teaching each other what we can do besides drugs
