It's better for SpaceX to 'go it alone' to Mars. SpaceX has repeatedly asked NASA to streamline it's red tape, to make NASA a 'one stop shop' to launch to space. Instead SpaceX is at war with a new government agency each week.
Musk should have kept those oil rigs, so he could launch in International waters…away from every activist group dedicated to stopping Starship flights.
Not really worried about it worse case scenario anybody in space will be speaking Chinese. Good times let's not do a thing about it..
As a grandmother, I can think of few things I could do to enlarge my grandchildren's future than to deliberately take a one way trip to Mars. If the 1st to go saw themselves as colonists, explorers and on-site research scientists, then they can do what robots can't regards preparing a waystation for the next ship. Humans can adjust and immediately try new approaches better than any preprogrammed robot and better than any robot waiting 20 minutes for an Earth-generated update.

I am an old guy who has watched and participated in the boom and bust space cycle. Look if we applied let’s say 100 billion per year with the intent on commercialization of space, we would not only create tremendous jobs here directly, but also with double maybe even triple the number of higher paying subcontractors jobs and offshoot technology to get us there.
SLS has not really been a great innovator not even an upgrade to most of the systems. If anything, it is a Frankenstein project that only works because it is still a simple design.
We waste so much energy, time and resources instead of making a plan fully funded and commercialized with getting us there on a timeline that is doable.
Currently , they keep changing it because in reality they have to continually Re budget multiple times. NASA has become not much more than a jobs program.
As for the plan for the Moon and Mars. Use the Moon to test out tech for Mars, duh it is obvious for most of us. FYI when I was working on KSC and CCAFS before Challenger accident we had over 61k directly working there as both employees and as contractors. After Challenger it dropped to less than 20k within a year. Thousands were directly affected, even worse was the direction of the realignment took.
If you really want to make this happen, it will take every space company operating today and hundreds thousands of others to make it happen. This is doable, we have a care taker crew operating currently. Unleash the potential we can create enormous opportunities for our younger generations across the world. Space X has shown the way. Not many are alive who heard the naysayers back in the day that Apollo would fail like the previous programs did. There will always be haters naysayers pretenders just ignore them, I am getting older by the day.
Lastly, remember money is not spent in space at the local ATM space station, but here on earth, call, write your congressman,stay on them, make it a priority, spend the Monopoly money here and now, not give it away, to others with no return.

Artemis was "valid" 15 – 20 years ago, i.e., at conception. But NASA's development philosophy is like that for fixed structures like roads, bridges, and dams. They do not innovate on a timescale that the rapid change in testing engineering affords.
I think the Jamaica Bob sledding team will reach Mars before NASA.
NASA is NOT, repeat, NOT dependent on SpaceX to return to the Moon!

I think going to the moon first just to test and try things out and find the issues somewhere where a rescue can be mounted and undertaken in a matter of days if something was to go horribly wrong. If going direct to Mars and something unforeseen was to occur, best case scenario is what… 5.5 months of travel time? That's assuming mars and Earth are aligned which only happens every 2 years. Way better to find the solutions to the problems we have not even thought could be a problem somewhere closer to home.
If Musk was left to his own devices, and had the plan to go to the moon first (if he wasnt doing HLS) then on the Mars. I think he'd probably at least get to the Moon before NASA (as in a crewed landing), but I wouldnt think he'd get to a crewed landing on Mars before NASA got to crewed landing on the moon.
I wouldnt 100% agree on HLS being only for the moon. It will be human rated. It will have the same dimensions as a normal starship, same interior. So in reality all its missing is a heat shield and flaps. It will have landing legs. Changing HLS for Mars missions will require maybe 10% extra work to change things around to be suited for Mars, and by that time there may be more than 1 unmanned Starship on Mars so SpaceX will have data on Mars Entry and landing by then. So designing HLS for the moon now, is also designing large swaths of the Mars crewed lander at the same time. Its well worth it. Elon already said that the first few starships to go to Mars most likely will not return, they will stay and likely eventually be scrapped and used for resources on Mars.
I also wouldnt agree with the refuelling. It takes less propellant to go from earth to leo, then to the moon, and land at the moon than to Mars including a landing. Granted Starship has to get off the moon again, but still its probably not going to be as much. So if say 10 starships worth of refuelling is needed for Mars, only 6-7 for a moon landing would be needed, plus some extra for taking off from the moon surface again.
Lets not forget, HLS is not the only human rated starship with a plan. Polaris Dawn plans to have mission 3 I believe as the first crewed Starship mission. Which was said by Jared Isaacman in a recent interview. That kinda suggests, that Polaris' 3rd mission will occur before Artemis III.
The thing is, HLS is done by SpaceX, so one of the biggest hurdles is being speed up by SpaceX. All NASA (and other contractors) has to do is get humans to space, and make sure Orion capsule can land.

This truism suggests that those nation-states which have little to no regard for human life will have a certain advantage. Nevertheless, my bet is on the courage and innovation of men and women from freer societies. Man’s future trips off-world will present dangers and opportunities which can scarcely be imagined now, and success will likely hinge on individual qualities which do not develop or long survive in more slavish and regimented societies.
Greenhouse’s on the Moon or Mars Seems like a bad idea, windows in such a places is a dangerous luxuries, much safer with solar panels and LED grow lights.
The moon is the proving ground for colonization. So far human space travel is a clean environment. The moon/mars are covered in electrostatic irradiated dust. We need to figure out how to deal with it on the moon or mars is totally pointless.. unless we are talking about a multi billion dollar field trip to plant a flag and take some space selfies, we need to figure out what extraterrestrial habitation even looks like. Landing pads, cleaning space suits, fuel production.. power.. many things need to be proven.. So far colonization is just a bunch of youtube videos about tipping starship on its side and cutting out a door.. not even remotely good enough
Does starship even need a heat shield for mars? Is there enough atmosphere smacking into the hull to create plasma?
If you are talking about a manned mission to actually land on Mars, the answer is no. I think it will take more time probably a decade or more than the most optimistic of statements about this.
Could probably have humans on the moon by 2025 if NASA has okayed the Dynetics Alpaca.

Elon Musk has been a con man since the beginning. He has only two entente’s that are viable. When he loses both of them he will face prison. It is called fraud. Elon does not have enough years yet to live to wait on NASA to be ready to undertake Mars. This will be like the European explorers in the 1400s … you can't wait until somehow the journey will be de- risked … someone will beat you there.
SpaceX and the FAA recently released a new plan to use Pad39A for super-heavy and Starship. They stated a total of 44 launches…hmm 1 launch to get Starship in orbit and 10 refueling launches =11 times 1 a quarter to the moon= 44 ?!
Without a presence on the moon to use as a resupply/refueling hub getting to the rest of the solar system is going to be impossible at scale.
Yes, you can do direct Earth to Mars missions, but they’re going to be significantly more expensive at scale because of the costs of getting out of Earth’s gravity well.
The biggest problems reaching the moon are 100% political. Our military-industrial complex still thinks there is more money to be made killing people than can be made exploring the universe. Change that perspective, lobby those past-bound idiots into seeing better profits possible "out there", you might be surprised how willingly they will glorify risking lives in the pursuit of knowledge.
The moment Knowledge Gain is truly deemed as more important than Territory Gain, you will see a massive effort to becoming interplanetary.
