  1. The most efficient solution for storing solar energy is to extract energy from the ground with a ground source heat pump, like Matt has.
    This solution has the lowest CO2 emissions.
    The next step would be to supplement the system with an air source heat pump that only runs when the outside temperature exceeds the earth's temperature.

  2. What I really want is a heat battery that will store heat for about 6-9 months. At that point, I can hold all the heat from summer over to warm my house in winter and then use the cold from winter to cool my house in summer. Alas, thermodynamics and heat insulation limits make that a pipe dream. Current systems are only good for a few days at best as the heat leaks away: they're really designed just to level out daily heating loads, not annual heating and cooling loads.

  3. If it only reaches 40°C then that water is nowhere Safe, similar issue exists with Heatpumps. The Energy savings in ideal conditions don't matter as you will rarely ever operate in those conditions for any length of time and even if you were you'd need to come up with 15°C-20°C to keep the Water safe for Human use.

  4. we in Malaysia had abundant of solar sunshine and rain all year round. We did not fully utilized this gift yet we keep on making so much of noise on gas fuel prices yet never willing to try on alternative energy. Sometimes people which live in a colder climate tend to have a clever brain. They able to use every single drop of resources available without waste.

  5. Worthless here in the northern Chihuahuan desert where we usually have only 2 months of cool, and rarely what anyone anywhere else in the country would describe as "cold" weather. We spend nearly all of our energy on air conditioning. While you could use sand to power a gas-absorption system, these systems are extremely expensive and would require many years to recover their cost. Just thought out how different life is in the desert southwest on many levels.

  6. I think sand would be more versatile for colder climates, coming from an architectural perspective, my mind immediately goes to the idea I would prefer to pitch sand over water with a client
