This was such a cool experience!!ā¤ļø LET ME BE CLEAR, I really do like Midnightsš I filmed this reaction last week and since then the songs have grown on me even more. I LOVE pop music, and I love a lot of the pop songs on this album. But like I told yāall in my Folklore video, Iām not IN LOVE with ALL of Taylorās pop sounds. I donāt know how to explain it, but some songs have the āla-dee-daā sound, like āBejeweledā for instance. In MY opinion. Thatās a sound I have to get used to. I know some people will come for me in the comments, but I always have to be honest with you guys cause if not, what are we even here for??šAnd I never wanted to be the person to lie for views. 47:04 this song is written about Scooter Braun who bought her music rights from under her. Hence the lyric, my Pennieās made your crown. He was horrible to her and bullied her. Taylor re-recording her music and getting to own them outright, is the Karma. Itās a very pointed song.
i think the reason so many people donāt like taylor is they refuse to analyze the lyrics and they just hear the radio hits and donāt care to look into the meaning behind them cause even her radio hits have such deep meanings
with maroon i always thought of "so scarlett it was maroon" is her almost contradicting herself, or trying to warn herself. like the word "scarlett" is more of a brighter red, representing a lighter, more happier time in the relationship, whereas "maroon" is a darker shade, which represents the more dull and dark sides to the relationship. so her saying it was "so scarlett" is her reminiscing on the good times that she had in the relationship, and almost trying to block out all the bad parts, but then by cutting herself off by saying "it was maroon" is her reminding herself there was a lot of dark sides to the relationship.

Midnights suffers from being released in the midst of the re-release of two of her biggest era albums: Speak Now and 1989. It is to date her biggest chart debut that week's billboard top 20 was her entire album list. However, while Swifties loved it when it was released and it was well received critically, it didn't get to breathe because the tour started and that sent everyone into a nostalgic trip back into their own favourite era, 1989, rep, debut, fearless, red etc., and that made it drop rank in a way that I don't think it would have if it had been allowed space to breathe within the fandom. Also, Folklore, Evermore and Red tv were the three previous drops and those were a delight for the debut/red girlies plus folklore and evermore acted as an intro for new Swifties who hadn't heard much of her catalog before, so for them, especially if they aren't into pop, Midnights is a bucket of cold water. The funny thing is even though many Swifties don't talk about it as lovingly as they do their own eras, they ride for You're on your own kid, Maroon, dear reader, woulda coulda shoulda, lavender haze, sweet nothing, midnight rain, hell I ride for Glitch. I think after the tour Swifties will come back around with gentler opinions.

a few things i like to point out (these are non confirmed theories or my own opinion)
DISCLAIMER THIS IS LONG I GOT REALLY INTO WRITING IT I AM SORRY T.T
for context: taylor and joe got together during the kanye MVA and the whole Kardashian hating her and people hating her situation. during that time taylor pretty much went into hiding and she wasn't as popular as she is today. many fans believe joe did not like the fact that her fame rose to the levels it is now but he wanted a private life ("he wanted a bride, i was making my own name"). it was also hinted by "a close source" that he didn't like her fame. and many fans also believe taylor was actually ready to end her career for him, but then something happened between them or she changed her mind.
– maroon is a very deep red almost and it makes me think of a red you have ignored for so long it has became darker (idk about wine but i assume maybe that's hot it works), more apparent and harder to ignore. if you pay attention to the song she actually cuts herself from saying maroon as if she is trying to still ignore it. also "how we end up on the floor anyway? you roommate cheap ass screw top rose" -> how did we end up at the bottom? we started from rose, a very pale shade of red!
– anti hero, about the image of the sexy baby and the monster i always saw it as the final girl and the monster in horror movies. and the line about staring at the sun but never in the mirror i saw as preferring to hurt yourself over looking in the mirror as if you would prefer to damage your eyes than to look at yourself because you feel disgusting ("a monster on the hill") in a physical or mental or emotional way.
– snow on the beach, as you said, doesn't last long most of the times. it's weird, beautiful, but also non lasting. i also tie this to labyrinth "never trust it if it rises fast, it can't last": sonw accumulates fast, but it doesn't last, it always ends up melting. a relationship that was weird (him being private and her being public) but beautiful (we can recognise that a relationship that ended up hurting us had some beautiful moments), but that was always going to end.
– YOYK is fans favourite and the reason why people exchange friendship bracelets at the eras tour. yes taylor struggled a lot with ED and she has been very open about it. there were times during 2014 in which journalists constantly talked about her body and it did a lot to her. ultimately the song is about being able to do things on your own which, given the fact the album came out when we still didn't know about the breakup, should have been a big hint to the situation. also "in a blood soaked gown" is a reference to horror movie Carrie which is one of Taylor's favourite and i think may hint to the MVA kanye moment: her on the stage and everyone looking at her horrified. And then the loss of her albums that was followed with the realisation that she owned her music and her whole rebuilding herself ("i saw something they can take away cause there were pages turned with the bridges burned, everything you loose is a step you take").
– a big theory about question is that joe cheated with an actress in the series a crowded room (have you ever kissed someone in a crowded room) and that's taylor pretty much calling him out on it.
– vigilante shit is DEFINTELY about the kanye situation and her getting revenge against him. helping kim Kardashian with her divorce. just queen shit
– bejeweled, once again how did we not realise they broke up? i think this is her reminding joe of her worth and not wanting to leave her career (if the rumours about that are true). you want me to stop being me? i don't need you, i can sparkle with or without you. you knew what you were getting into when you got with me, i have been a good girl for too long without you recognising it.
– sweet nothings, with insight fan's are theorising it really was "nothings" and taylor was trying to romanticise it. "you tell me what a mind, it happens all the time" gives big eye rolling vibes idk, like he kind of dismisses her with that sentence. like he does the bare minimum and she's supposed to consider it this big love declaration. also, "they say the end is coming, everyone is up to something, i find myself running to your sweet nothing" feel like denial: everyone is telling me this relationship is ending, i don't want to accept it so i find meaning into you bare minimum gestures. and to tie it to peace as you said: she is willing to give EVERYTHING (her career even as speculated) but he only does the bare minimum.
– mastermind is MY SONG i swear this woman has a camera in my room or something. i feel like this song is not really about being a mastermind but believing you are one. believing you don't deserve love ("no one wanted to play with me as a little kid, so i have been scheming like a criminal ever since to make them love me and make it seem effortless") and thinking that when people love you it's because you somehow manipulated him. we can't, to a certain extent of course, manipulate people into loving us. but if we believe we don't deserve love in the first place (we are a monster on the hill after all right?), we may think we have manipulated them. and i feel like in the end "i saw a wide smirk on your face you knew the entire time 'cause I'm a mastermind" makes me think that she feels like she even manipulated him to accept that she manipulated him into the relationship. also, the fact that she sounds like she is begging him to believe her when she sings "i swear I'm only cryptid and macheavellian cause i care" makes me weep.
– the great war makes me think of realising this relationship isn't worth it. that the war didn't end because they found a middle ground but because they didn't feel like fighting for it to work anymore. "somewhere in the haze got a sense i have been betrayed" the alleged cheating. him apologising, trying to reach out, her shutting him out. but she still loves him. wanting to have it work. but it's done, the love has been damaged.
– bigger than the whole sky is been alleged by some fans to be about a miscarriage, i will not comment on that because i feel like it's a delicate topic, but it's been a big comfort for people who went through it. but i think it could be tied to a lyrics of the song you're losing me.

– dear reader, we thought it was a happy relationship, she is saying us it wasn't. don't believe me saying it ended up well, it didn't.

The all of the people Iāve ghosted stand there in the room line in anti-hero to me doesnāt mean they are physically standing there but rather she canāt stop perseverating over them or what happened between them. They are taking up space in her head – room – and she canāt get them out

Would've, Could've, Should've – the line "give me back my girlhood, it was mine first" absolutely guts me every single time. š This song is about John Mayer. She was 19 when they dated. He was 32. She released this song at 32 yoa and its the 19th track on the album. This song hurts SO MUCH.

High Infidelity is a twist on High Fidelity. In a digital music space, we don't hear that phrase much anymore but when records were popular a "high fidelity" record was one with high quality sound that was as true as possible to the original
Midnights had to grow on me too but it really is good.
I also think there is a slight subtlety in Dear reader when she says "you should find another guiding light" the way it sounds when sung is "you should find another GUY…ding light" like you should find another guy if he treats you like this, without SAYING 'I have to find another guy, cuz mine isnt treating me right' lol
