Final Fantasy VII Rebirth OST: No Promises to Keep – FFVII soundfont/style demake

OH HI I’m back! No Promises to Keep by the great Nobuo Uematsu for FFVII Rebirth, demake to put it back in the style / sounds (ish) of the original 1997 Final Fantasy VII. No Promises to Keep was suggested by @laylamorrison9596 – thank you!

I have a playlist of I think over 50(??) Remake / Crisis Core / Advent Children – also FFXVI for some reason – tracks demade in this way , you should check it ooout. Including Cloud Smiles, teased at the end of this video. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJpTK8tDcxD3t_Sv1gV3LnSapeFSXPTzM

Well, it’s a big ballad!! I have to say it grew on me immensely while transcribing and working on this. Also I read on a wiki a quote from Uematsu saying β€œthe poignant melody from β€˜Aerith’s Theme’ does not appear in this song” … which …?? is β€œmelody” a mistranslation, or is the point that it’s no longer melancholy/poignant in that way? because Aerith’s Theme most definitely IS referenced in this, a LOT. So much. A lot in the accompaniment, sure, so maybe that’s down to the arranger, but also…… in the sung melody? (β€œBut believe…” etc, it’s the shape anyway, surely.) So, yes. There’s a fun game, spot the refs πŸ˜€ I based this on the in-game version, but added a second β€œverse” before the chorus just because I like the balance better that way. I definitely really enjoyed the lush orchestration (–and put it on soundfont as best I could, but I didn’t want to cut much and wanted to add a few touches…) β€” reminds me of Cloud Smiles. Epic French horn counter melodies, swishy strings – and a funky bass line, always like those.

Footage from the upscaled Remako project. I actually used a lot of this already for https://youtu.be/3PlStwRFrxw?si=4x5YaevL40wCy7hu with my own music, but yes, until I thought of this I wasn’t sure what footage to use without igniting the LTD in my comments, which I preferred to avoid ORZ

  1. When I first heard Uematsu play the notes on his keyboard on his live rendition he did with Loren Allred on The First Take, Aerith's familiar theme from the original was made all the more clearer so it felt even more nostalgic to me. I'm really happy to see this wonderful rendition using the original 1997 soundfont, it's still melody-strong and aged really well. Thank you for such a beautiful cover! πŸ₯°

  2. It strangely gives me a feeling of having time-traveled back to my younger days. There was no internet, no smartphones, no social media. I would just sit alone in front of the old television, completely immersively absorbed in the fantasy world of Final Fantasy. I'd experience all the emotions – the joy, the suffering, the tragedy – that felt so real. Those stories completed my emotional education as a teenager, helping me grow into the adult man I am today. I can't help but wish I could experience that kind of growth again and again.
