You couldve guessed right if you wouldve just paid attention to the shapes of the slopes. The straight one is linear, y=x… While the curvy one could probably be modeled by x^2… Say x = 5, linear function says x=5, y=5… Quadratic function however says x=5, y=25. Hope this helps ❤

The problem is the wavy one doesn’t go back above the straight one. It is consistently below the other thus the speed difference. Just like an exponential curve would be way faster even though they end at the same point

I only had a big hunch the left side would win after it was made clear the results were 'surprising'. If you look closely intuition can take you to the answer. The first thing to notice, the dips are more extreme than the hills. Quickly though, the next thought had me swapping the guess. The right would win. Left might launch off the first hill or 'ramp', crash into the next ramp and lose enough momentum to let the right side overtake, as it deflected off of 'awkward' surfaces.
My third thought was just imagining how marble runs tend to behave, i've seen them grip tracks that were even more extreme than this. The left marble would shoot off, combining all of these factors, you strengthen your own intuition.
I love this stuff, it reminds me that understanding physics problems and even science in general benefit from assessing things that are intuitive to us, combining them, and then using the result to realise and sit within a new intuition.
Essentially, our fleshy, middle sized, survival concerned brains have a lot of trouble with building new intuition.
I can deal with a deceptive marble run, but jeeze, it must be incredibly hard for modern scientists to take something like a black hole and go "you know what this reminds me of?"
Didn't expect that since the one on the bumps actually has to travel farther to get to the same end point.

Can some please explain, I only have a high school understanding of physics and I would think that because both of them have the same potential speed both should have the same speed by the end. Do they have the same speed by the end but it’s just that the curve balls initial acceleration is faster but slows down? Or is it that it is faster?
