Adam Crozier, who was chief executive of the Royal Mail Group — of which the Post Office was a part — between 2003 and 2010, told the inquiry he did not recall there being oversight from board members over prosecutions brought against sub-postmasters.
Crozier expressed “surprise” over claims that Alan Cook was unaware of the Post Office’s role in private prosecutions against sub-postmasters.
Although the Post Office has no special authority to bring private prosecutions, it pursued cases against its staff using a unique investigation branch that has existed in some form for hundreds of years.
