I noticed that the notebooks appear similar to the Field Notes notebooks in terms of their form factor. The crest on the cover looks great! I hope they pass your ink test. You will definitely enjoy the X159 as the line is slightly on the finer side of medium, and my example was smooth right out of the box. The #8 nib complements the larger size of the section and barrel much better than the old metal 159, which had a smaller nib. By the way, keep an eye out for the Jinhao 9019. It was released after the X159 and resembled another well-known expensive pen from Japan. The converter on the 9019 has also been upgraded and is now designed to screw into the section of the pen for a tighter fit.
I remember the red Memo books and the blue marbled A5 too!
Unbelievable, I have loved these pens for YEARS!! The 0.7 size but still, they are a fantastic pen that never seem to fail
Pilot G2 – 1.0mm broad (12 pack).
One of my favourite pens. The broad ball flows extremely well, across all types of paper and, crucially, stands out well against shadowing and show-though. If you've only used the standard, 0.7mm ball then try this broad version at least once. You may end up liking it a lot!
I use these either "as is", or as a hybrid, using a Kaweco rollerball body.
This is a Cult Pens link, although you can sometimes find them cheaper on Amazon.

Silvine "memo" notebooks (3 pack)
Worth a look, if you're looking for (fairly) fountain pen friendly paper, that's relatively cheap.
