Agreed the carriers are an expensive embarrassment. However if you think the defence budget is a problem eating away at the well-being of the population, the prospect of war with Russia could lead to a colossal increase in the defence budget, not on ships, but on land forces, and we will ALL be living in WW2-style poverty, with rationing of food, electricity, and luxuries such as toilet paper, cars, mobile phones, medicines, and most of everything else that we take for granted, because there is a very bad man called Putin who wants to hurt us.
Firstly the f35b didn't even enter service in the US till 2015, so saying that for the past 13 years they could have bought some is bs.
Secondly the F35 program in a multi national program, not just a US program.
The QEC class CAN have catapults already. The ship was designed and built with cats in mind. All of the super structure required to have them were built from day one. They have not been installed yet due to the current needs on the vessel.
And also, the choice to not go nuclear was intentional.
Nuclear powered shipped are banned in many ports around the world. So can only be repaired in dedicated ports. It always complicates resupplying.
Also, nuclear powered vessels, at the end of their life, are extremely difficult to decommission. Since we can not just sell a nuclear powered ship. So they almost always end up mothballed in ports for decades rotting away.

You seem to know little of the subject other than what you've read in your left wing journals, and to start asking how many could we have paid more in benefits to, if we hadn't built ships for the Navy. Do you even understand what the Navy is for ?
something i think people fail to ask themselves when tossing around figures like "for this much money we could feed THIS many citizens, house THIS many homeless" etc
but it's a bit meaningless if the party in power isn't known for prioritizing feeding and housing people…even if they are the ones decrying the waste. there's a huge leap of faith between destroying something they don't like in a budget and where additional money ends up being spent…always look to their past priorities before believing what sounds like a great idea.

To improve British defence procurement. Perhaps having public design lotteries might work? This would be making details of requirements public and opening competition to everyone with a pencil and paper. Not to have an angled flght deck with a catapult and no real long-range missile and gun defense systems is inviting results made obvious by naval history. Force Z in WW2 and the disastrous anti aircrft systems in partial use in the Falklands war. The latter also revealed propeller shaft vulnerability. Making "Sids Strip" even more vital. At Port San Carlos. Getting rid of the Harriers was a terrible idea.
Stuff like this isn't a waste of money. If it does its job properly, it'll never be used. Money well spent really.

Cost is ultimately the overriding consideration. One really needs a minimum of two ships in a class due to refits and repairs etc. One benefit of a ski jump is increased reliability plus crew safety of course while fleet defence should be provided by escort ships as mentioned. Furthermore in times of conflict, additional aircraft could be loaned in the interim by the RAF and deliveries of the F35 aircraft continue to be made as production allows. As far as defects are concerned, I'm told that this is to be expected with new designs and the situation should improve over time. Can Britain afford them? It could be argued that she cannot not to, this world is just as unpredictable and volatile than ever wit the United States rightly or wrongly expecting it's Allies to 'pull their weight'. Moreover Britain in the 1930s had a population far worse off than todays' yet found the need to invest in national defence absolutely vital, however no intention to trivialise the plight of poverty is intended. An expensive white Elephant or soundly conceived platform? Only time will well.
It's crazy to me that the UK has less F-35's than Australia does.
The part about the RAF and RN having to share F-35s is a bit misleading… Just as they did with Joint Force Harrier of the early 2000s, squadrons from both the RAF and Fleet Air Arm form a joint force to operate F-35Bs from both carriers and land.
Good lord, this is why canning the Maltas back in the 40s was a terrible idea.

This guy just hates Britain… Look at this other vids, he always shirts round the Brits that invented what the video is about (or ignores them) and just belittles Britain at EVERY opportunity.
Is a bit inconsistent first its too expensive than not expensive enough! The UK carriers are not to fight China or Russia but just a show of force in Africa, South Amerika and to keep the dominions quiet. For that the old Sea Harriers where enough. If you build just a few Carriers every 25 years you will not have the experience to Build them without issues, see French, Russian, Indian, Chinese and US troubles.
The man benefit of the UK carriers is hopefully that most of the money spent stayed in the UK. Instead of some loony foreign project.
You have made better videos but at the least the level of background sound was good.
Also important to note that with a straight deck ski-jump carrier, you can only launch OR land ONE plane at a time. It's very much sequential. With the angled deck most US carriers have, you can launch 2 nearly back to back (not precisely at the same time, but within 5-10 seconds of each other), while lining up one to land. The best a straight deck could ever do is "launch one, land one".
Critically mind-boggling is that not only did the British invent the carrier, they invented the steam catapult, AND the angled deck. Yet modern British carriers (and those of many other nations) totally lack these technologies.
Imagine being told by Apple that the next gen iPhone will go back to only making phone calls, have physical number pad buttons, and a text only screen. "It's the FUTURE. You'll buy it. And you'll love it! But, if after trying it out for a few years, if you are dissatisfied, we will make touch screen add-on for extra cost."

We still another 1 or 2 QE class carrier, and dare I say it anotherr class of carrier preferably abit bigger, able to operate with only 3 or 4 support and defence ships instead of the 6 or 7 it needs now.
I wouldn't go too hard on the decision. It may have worked out to be bad timing with Brexit, and I don't know the ins and outs of this move, although it pissed me off when I thought we would have to follow some other countries dictate. Since it takes so long to build such a vessel, it might have had some bearing on being a proud leader of naval power for quite some time. I actually think a bigger issue for our countries is immigration of people who don't want to assimilate, but bring their own failed form of governance, religion, etc and suck up as much free stuff as they can get ahold of. Yes, I'm not happy about it or our current govt.

These carriers are intended for colonial type conflicts like war on Iraq, Libya and Syria. Then they wont need protection from escorts like Type 45s which are also in short supply and unreliable.
In light of learning that Britain only has 30 F-35's total, I'd like to brag about mighty Australia having 63 in service!

Everyone thinks aircraft Carriers are a waste UNTIL YOU NEED THEM. Harry S Truman found out in Korea and Margaret Thacher found out in The Falklands. Afterwards no one in the US made that mistake again but Britain forgets.

33% seems not uncommon for maintenance. The afaik have normally a 4-4-4 rotation of their super carriers. 4 on missions, 4 preparing for a mission, 4 in maintenance.
